St. Luke's Hospital Opens Patient Care Tower II

St. Luke’s Hospital opened the 82,000-sf Patient Care Tower II in The Woodlands, Texas, in November of 2008. The four-story, 59-bed facility was designed by HGA (Hammel, Green and Abrahamson) and built by W. S. Bellows Construction Corporation. Featuring telemetry at every bed, the building includes facilities for surgery and intensive care services. The expansion brings the hospital’s footprint to 266,000-sf with a total of 144 beds. The Patient Care Tower II can be expanded with two additional floors in the future.

Sacred Heart Hospital Builds Cancer Center

Sacred Heart Hospital initiated construction on a $31.5 million cancer center in Pensacola, Fla., in November of 2008. The 90,000-sf facility is slated for completion in late 2009. The project will house outpatient chemotherapy, radiation and medical oncology, patient support and education, laboratory services, and a pharmacy. Sacred Heart Hospital is affiliated with the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Kingston General Hospital Initiates Renovation and Expansion

Construction began on a major redevelopment of Kingston General Hospital in Kingston, Ontario, in summer of 2008. Comprised of an addition of 170,000 sf and 143,000 sf of renovation, the project will improve access and provide expanded intensive care, cancer treatment, surgical, inpatient mental health, and pediatric services. The construction manager is PCL Constructors Canada.

Clarian Health Expands La Porte Community Health Center

Clarian Health broke ground on a $1.2 million expansion of La Porte Hospital Community Health Center (CHC) in November of 2008. Located in La Porte, Ind., the project will create six additional exam rooms, a laboratory, and a community education classroom. The expansion will enable CHC to provide additional outpatient care, imaging, diagnostic treatment, and dental services. Completion is slated for October of 2009.

Uniontown Hospital Builds Inpatient Tower

Uniontown Hospital will construct a $59 million inpatient tower on its healthcare campus in Uniontown, Pa. The 100,000-sf project will feature 56 private patient rooms. The expansion will enable outpatient services to be centralized and will enhance hospital access.

University of Minnesota Develops Biomedical Research Facilities

The University of Minnesota Medical School will construct four biomedical research buildings in Minneapolis. The 56,000-sf Center for Magnetic Resonance Research is slated for completion in July of 2010 and the 120,000-sf Cancer Biomedical Research Building will open in January of 2012. The 120,000-sf Lillehei Heart Building will include the Center for Cardiovascular Repair and is expected to reach completion in July of 2012. The 90,000-sf Infectious Disease and Neuroscience building will open in July of 2013.

Siteman Cancer Center Builds Proton Radiation Facility

Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University are building the Kling Center for Proton Therapy at the Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis. Featuring a $20 million miniature proton radiation system built on-site by Still River Systems, the facility will open in October of 2009. The Kling Center will be able to treat 200 patients annually.

Torbay Hospital Builds Virtual Operating Theater

Torbay Hospital is building a £5 million education and research center in Torquay, United Kingdom. Featuring a virtual operating theater and computer simulators, the three-story project will support training in advanced surgical techniques. The facility is being built by general contractor Kier Western. Slated for completion in early 2009, the building includes a clinical learning zone with teaching facilities.

West Chester Medical Center’s $225 million hospital is slated for completion in May of 2009 in West Chester Township, Ohio. The 383,000-sf, 160-bed facility is being built by Mortenson-Messer Healthcare Construction. The project broke ground in July of 2006.

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Opens Rangos Research Center

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh opened the 300,000-sf John G. Rangos Sr. Research Center on October 29, 2008. Located in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville district, the 10-story building will support biomedical research in heart disease, liver failure, pediatric cancer, diabetes, genomics, immunology, and neuroscience. Comprised of flexible, open laboratories accommodating 70 principal investigators, the facility will promote collaboration and interaction as well as providing shared equipment. Children’s will open a new hospital adjacent to the research building in May of 2009.

University of Michigan Health System Builds Mott Hospital

The University of Michigan Health System is constructing the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. The 1.1 million-sf project is comprised of a 12-story inpatient tower and a nine-story clinic tower. Designed by HKS Architects, the project includes two MRI units, a MRI-OR suite, and multiple operating rooms. The LEED-certified project will provide 348 private inpatient beds and is slated for occupancy in 2012.

University of Louisville Dedicates Outpatient Facility

The University of Louisville dedicated its $45 million Outpatient Center in October of 2008. The seven-story, 169,000-sf facility is located in Louisville, Ky., and includes outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation, laboratory services, and a pharmacy. The project features a three-story atrium and dining.
