The Kaiser Foundation opened the $430 million Modesto Medical Center in September of 2008 in Modesto, Calif. The five-story, 1.45 million-sf facility includes 112 private acute care beds and a 24-bay emergency department with chemical decontamination showers and negative-pressure isolation rooms. The facility also houses a six-room surgery unit, a birthing center, and a neonatal ICU. Sustainable design features include recyclable rubber flooring, rooftop solar panels, PVC-free carpet backing, motion-sensor lighting, and permeable paving.

The University of California, Irvine completed the 482,428-sf University Hospital academic medical center in Orange, Calif., in September of 2008. The $375 million hospital provides 191 beds as well as research and training facilities for the UCI School of Medicine.

Phoenix Children's Hospital is constructing a $588 million patient care tower in Phoenix, Ariz. The 759,000-sf, 11-story facility will house inpatient rooms, diagnosis and treatment, support, and shell space. The project will double the footprint of the existing hospital and increase the number of licensed beds from 299 to 632. The mechanical systems contractor is University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors, a subsidiary of EMCOR Group. Completion is expected by 2012.

Queensland University of Technology opened the $10.7 million Medical Engineering and Research Facility at The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane in September of 2008. The translational research facility will support collaboration between medical specialists and biomedical researchers in areas such as orthopaedic medicine, critical care, and artificial organs. Enabling surgeons and researchers to develop new methods and technologies on donor bodies, the project will foster biomedical innovation as well as providing medical training for healthcare professionals.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia’s $400 million Colket Translational Research Building is slated for completion in 2010. Sited on Children's Hospital's South Campus, the 450,000-sf, eleven-story facility will include four laboratory floors, administrative offices, a cafeteria, conference space, and a two-story lobby. Four below-grade floors will house infrastructure, laboratory support, and a central utility plant.

Central DuPage Hospital will begin construction in fall of 2008 on a 58,000-sf proton therapy cancer center in Warrenville, Ill. Completion is expected by 2010 and the facility will open in 2011. The $140 million center will provide treatment for up to 1,500 patients each year.

The Hauenstein Center at Saint Mary’s Healthcare is under construction in Grand Rapids, Mich. The $60 million neurological research and treatment facility began construction in November of 2006 and is slated for completion in February of 2009. Housing research, inpatient care, and outpatient services in a single location, the four-story, 145,000-sf building will include 66 patient beds, an emergency department, and clinical offices. LEED Silver certification for sustainable design will be sought for the project.

Yale School of Medicine completed the 25,864-sf Laboratory for Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology (LSOG) in New Haven, Conn., in September of 2008. Designed by Svigals + Partners, the $9 million project involved renovation of the second and third floors of the LSOG building to house updated research laboratories, instructional spaces, conference rooms, and offices.

Sherman Health is constructing a $325 million replacement hospital in Elgin, Ill. Designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott, the 645,273-sf facility broke ground in June 2006 and is slated for completion in December 2009. The 255-bed facility features all private rooms and will include a six-story patient tower, a two-story diagnosis and treatment center, a cancer center, and an emergency department. Sited on 154 acres, the facility will be heated and cooled by a 15-acre geothermal lake.

Gilbert Hospital is planning to construct a patient tower on its campus in Gilbert, Ariz. The expansion will house 20 inpatient beds, eight ICU beds, a cardiac catheterization lab, imaging, and surgery. Construction is expected to begin by March of 2009.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center is constructing the Northwest Pavilion, a $300 million expansion of its Neptune, N.J., hospital. Adding 400,000 sf, the project includes a 213,000-sf emergency and trauma center, a 109,000-sf diagnosis and treatment facility, 108 private inpatient rooms, six surgery suites, pediatrics, imaging, and helipad. Clinical and outpatient areas will also be renovated. Construction began in summer of 2006 and is slated for completion in July of 2009.

Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre celebrated the opening of its $355-million facility in September of 2008 in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The 300-bed public-private partnership was financed, designed, and built by Access Health Abbotsford, a private company that will also maintain and operate the facility. The public healthcare system will provide all clinical services. The project is designed to consume 40 percent less energy than comparable facilities.

The University of Massachusetts Medical School is planning to build a $420 million biomedical research facility in Worcester. The building will support research in genetic therapy, stem cells, and RNAi. UMass Worcester is also building a seven-story medical education and clinical practice center slated for occupancy in 2010.

The Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital opened in September of 2008 at Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C. Featuring wireless technology for optimal communication between patients and nurses, the $45 million facility can accommodate up to 150 mothers and their new arrivals. The duration of planning and construction for the project was three years.

Covenant Health is building the 200,000-sf LeConte Medical Center in Sevierville, Tenn. Slated for completion in 2009, the 79-bed hospital will include the Dolly Parton Center for Women's Services, the Dr. Robert F. Thomas Professional Building, and the Thompson Cancer Survival Center. The $110 million medical center will include private patient rooms, a 10-bed ICU step-down unit, emergency department, surgery, helipad, and a sleep center.
