University of Tennessee Medical Center broke ground in July of 2008 on a $26 million heart hospital in Knoxville. Slated for completion in 2010, the four-story facility will house inpatient care including a 24-bed cardiovascular ICU for the Heart Lung Vascular Institute.
Royal Jubilee Hospital broke ground on its $350 million inpatient facility in Victoria, B.C., in July of 2008. The 37,000-sm, 500-bed hospital will provide acute care as well as housing a Centre of Excellence in elder care. The patient-centered facility will open in early 2011 with 400 beds, 80 percent of them in private rooms, with more beds to be added according to demand. LEED Gold certification for sustainable design will be sought for the project.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ expansion of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute is slated for completion in 2010. The 300,000-sf, 12-story project will house research and clinical facilities. The first $130 million construction phase will include seven completed floors. The project team is comprised of Cromwell Architects Engineers of Little Rock, FKP Architects of Houston, and CDI Contractors.
Botsford Hospital’s $16.5 million cancer center in Farmington, Mich., will reach completion in January of 2009. LEED Silver certification for sustainable design will be sought for the 30,000-sf facility, which will use 30 percent less water and 17.5 percent less energy than comparable buildings. The project will feature low-VOC interior finishes, rainwater harvesting, and recycling of construction waste.
Washington University is initiating construction on the $235 million BJC Institute of Health at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Housing the University’s BioMed 21 translational research initiative, the 70,000-sf, 11-story facility was funded in part by a $30 million donation from BJC Healthcare. Slated for completion in December of 2009, the facility will house five BioMed laboratories with support and two School of Medicine academic departments.
Fiona Stanley Hospital broke ground on its $1.76 billion facility in Murdoch, Western Australia, in July of 2008. The 643-bed hospital will serve as Western Australia's flagship healthcare facility and is slated for completion in late 2013. The technology-rich tertiary hospital will include a trauma center, heart and lung transplant services, and teaching facilities.
Mercy Medical Center’s $262 million hospital in Merced, Calif., is slated for completion in December of 2009. Housing 196 private patient rooms, the 265,000-sf, eight-story facility will open to patients in spring of 2010. Mercy Medical Center is part of Catholic Healthcare West.
Sacred Heart Health System initiated construction in July of 2008 on its $35 million hospital in Port St. Joe, Fla. Sited on 27 acres, the facility features private rooms, an emergency department, helipad, two operating rooms, laboratory services, and an outpatient medical office building. The project construction manager is Greenhut Construction Co. Completion is expected in fall of 2009.
Lebanese American University broke ground on the Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chaghoury School of Medicine in Byblos on July 18, 2008. Slated for completion in 2010, the 12,500-sm facility will house the new medical school and the Alice Ramez Chaghoury School of Nursing. The $18 million project will include classrooms, simulation and training suites, an electronic library, videoconferencing facilities, and multidisciplinary laboratories.
Stanford Medical Center is planning to construct a $2 billion replacement hospital in Palo Alto, Calif. The seven story, 1.1 million-sf facility is slated for occupancy in 2015. Housing a total of 600 beds, the facility will meet state seismic safety requirements and will be designed with the flexibility to accommodate future medical technologies. The new hospital will include a Level 1 trauma center, an expanded emergency room, and positive pressure nursing units for the minimization of airborne contaminants.
The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville will break ground on the $26 million West Pavilion cardiovascular facility on July 24, 2008. The four-story tower will house inpatient care for the hospital’s Heart Lung Vascular Institute. The project will include endoscopy labs, an expanded medical library, patient conference center, and lobby. The tower will connect to existing surgical suites and cardiac catheterization labs. Completion is slated for early 2010.
The University at Albany is partnering with Albany Medical Center to build a $42 million biomedical research facility at UAlbany's East Campus in East Greenbush, N.Y. The 110,000-sf Institute for Biomedical Education and Research will accommodate collaborative research on cardiology, cancer, and neurological disorders.
Rockingham Memorial Hospital is building a $200 million healthcare campus in Harrisonburg, Va. Designed by Earl Swensson Associates, the 600,000-sf hospital is being constructed by Bovis Lend Lease. The six-story facility will house 238 beds, a cancer center, and a rehabilitation and fitness center. Completion is slated for June of 2010. LEED certification will be sought for the sustainably-designed facility.
Kaiser Permanente will build a 482,078-sf replacement hospital in Fontana, Calif. The seven-story, 314-bed facility will meet seismic safety standards set for the year 2030. The new sustainably-designed Fontana Medical Center Hospital will include a 51-bed emergency department and a cardiac center. A 32,100-sf central utility plant and the 55,774-sf Hospital Support Building, housing pharmacy, radiology, and ancillary services, will also be constructed at the site.
