UMass Medical School Plans Genetic Research Facility

The University of Massachusetts Medical School is planning to build a $420 million biomedical research facility in Worcester. The building will support research in genetic therapy, stem cells, and RNAi. UMass Worcester is also building a seven-story medical education and clinical practice center slated for occupancy in 2010.

Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital Opens in Wilmington

The Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital opened in September of 2008 at Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C. Featuring wireless technology for optimal communication between patients and nurses, the $45 million facility can accommodate up to 150 mothers and their new arrivals. The duration of planning and construction for the project was three years.

Covenant Health Builds LeConte Medical Center

Covenant Health is building the 200,000-sf LeConte Medical Center in Sevierville, Tenn. Slated for completion in 2009, the 79-bed hospital will include the Dolly Parton Center for Women's Services, the Dr. Robert F. Thomas Professional Building, and the Thompson Cancer Survival Center. The $110 million medical center will include private patient rooms, a 10-bed ICU step-down unit, emergency department, surgery, helipad, and a sleep center.

UW-Madison Opens East Tower of Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research

The University of Wisconsin, Madison opened the $134 million Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research East Tower in September of 2008. Housing the Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center, the seven-story, $185 million biomedical research facility includes multiple cancer specialties, core laboratory space, advanced imaging and radiation, surgery, and pharmacology research. One of three planned towers, the project will be accompanied by a second tower dedicated to neurosciences, cardiovascular health, and regenerative and molecular medicine.

Arkansas State University Constructs Center for Health Sciences

The University of Arkansas is building the $14.5 million Donald W. Reynolds Center for Health Sciences in Jonesboro. The three-story, 50,650-sf facility will house classrooms, nursing laboratories, research suites, and clinical space. Additionally, 16,750-sf of the Chickasaw Building for the College of Nursing and Health Professions will be renovated to house faculty offices and classrooms. The project team includes Jonesboro-based Brackett-Krennerich & Associates Architects and CDI Contractors of Little Rock.

Ronald McDonald House of Austin Attains LEED Platinum

The Ronald McDonald House of Austin and Central Texas has received LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The 28,500-sf Ronald McDonald House, which opened in December 2007, provides a nurturing environment where families stay together while their children receive treatment in Austin-area medical centers. Built on a brownfield site, the House has 30 guest rooms, multi-use common areas, and administrative offices. The facility incorporates three Hydrotech green roof systems, all of which contain native, drought-tolerant plant species.

Grady Health Breaks Ground on Hugh Spalding Pediatric Facility

Grady Health System broke ground in August of 2008 on a new $3.4-million facility at Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital in Atlanta. The four-story pediatric hospital is expected to open in 2010. Housing 24 inpatient beds, the project will include an emergency department and specialty clinics. Hughes Spalding is managed by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences Opens in Yakima

Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) opened the 45,000-sf College of Osteopathic Medicine in Yakima, Wash., in August of 2008. The $19.7 million facility will provide health science education for primary care physicians as well as offering degrees in nursing, public heath, and psychology. The private, not-for-profit college is planning to open the College of Allied Health Sciences and the College of Biomedical Sciences as early as fall of 2009.

University of South Dakota Dedicates Health Science Building

Part of the Sanford School of Medicine and the School of Health Sciences, the facility houses technology-rich faculty research laboratories, classrooms, and offices.

Franklin Woods Plans Nashville Hospital

Franklin Woods Community Hospital has selected Skanska USA Building as pre-construction and construction manager for its new healthcare facility in Johnson City, Tennessee. Karlsberger Architecture is providing the design for the 249,771-sf hospital, which will be part of the Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA) system. LEED Silver certification for sustainable design will be sought for the project.

Rush University Medical Center Constructs Sustainable Hospital

Rush University Medical Center is constructing a 300-bed, $575 million hospital in Chicago. Designed by Perkins+Will, the facility began construction in fall of 2008 and is slated for occupancy in 2012. LEED Gold certification for sustainable design will be sought for the new teaching hospital, which will feature energy efficient building systems and a green roof. The 14-story building will have a butterfly shape that expands outward at higher stories from a smaller rectangular base.

Harvard Builds Dubai Medical Simulation Center

Harvard Medical School Dubai Center (HMSDC) will open the Medical Simulation Center in Dubai in the first quarter of 2009. The 20,461-sf facility will provide a simulation environment for healthcare training in a facility housing an auditorium, teaching spaces, and a library. Including simulation operating rooms, intensive care units, emergency rooms, and ward rooms, the center will feature 6,000-sf for emergency medicine training.

Hendrick Medical Center Expands in Abilene

Hendrick Medical Center will break ground in late fall of 2008 on an $80 million expansion of its healthcare campus in Abilene, Texas. Dubbed “Project 2010”, the project will include a four-story patient tower with surgical and birthing suites and a separate physician office building. The new Hendrick Children's Hospital, featuring visual themes from the Berenstain Bears, will house larger patient rooms, pediatric ICU, and chemotherapy. Project 2010 will consist of 200,000-sf of new construction and 38,000-sf of renovation. Completion is slated for fall of 2010.

St. John Health Opens Providence Park Hospital in Novi

St. John Health opened the $220 million Providence Park Hospital in Novi, Mich., in August of 2008. The seven-story facility is sited on 64 acres and can accommodate 400 patients. Construction began on the project in 2005. Featuring flexible patient rooms, the 500,000-sf facility was designed by NBBJ and houses a six-story atrium for maximum daylighting.
