University of Florida Completes Biosafety Research Complex

Published 7/14/2003

The University of Florida has recently completed a modular research complex of BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory space. Buildings for Science, a division of Britz-Heidbrink, completed the design, production, and installation of this world-class research facility in less than one year. The complex has its own mechanical room area, an office-break area, a unisex bathroom/change area, a pass-through shower into the BSL-3 lab with accommodating locker space, and two separate procedure areas.

Temperature, humidity, and lighting are controlled centrally and can be accessed with computer technology from within the complex or remotely from the investigators lap top computer. The building automation system was supplied by Automated Logic Controls. The HEPA-filtered HVAC system filters 100 percent of the exhaust with no recirculation at 15 to 20 air changes per hour; the system was designed to allow both BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs in the same building. The airflow from room to room will assure that hot subjects do not contaminate the Specific Pathogen Free subjects. The building has redundant HEPA filters for the BSL-3 side for added security and safety. The building meets or exceeds all requirements for full AAALAC Accreditation.
