United Therapeutics Plans Research Triangle Park Facility

Published 7/10/2014

United Therapeutics is planning to build a biomedical R&D facility in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Comprising 250,000 sf of new construction and 150,000 sf of renovated space, the project will provide vivarium space for pigs and xenotransplantation research laboratories. The facility will enable the creation of genetically modified pig embryos which grow to be born with human lungs that can be harvested for transplants and tissue grafts. The solar-powered, pathogen-free building will be constructed around a central supply hub to optimize distribution of food, water, and bedding. Construction is expected to begin in 2015 and reach completion in two years.
