Arizona State University opened the $120 million Biodesign Institute Building C in September of 2018 in Tempe. Designed by ZGF Architects and BWS Architects, the five-story, 191,000-sf project features wet labs for chemistry, engineering, and biological sciences arranged in collaborative neighborhoods. Accommodating 80 lead researchers and 400 support staff, the facility houses the ASU-Banner Neurodegenerative Disease Research Center, the Center for Applied Structural Discovery, the Center for Mechanisms of Evolution, and labs for the School of Molecular Sciences. The basement level will accommodate the world’s first compact X-ray free-electron laser (CXFEL) in a vibration-mitigated vault. LEED certification will be sought for the sustainably designed facility, which features an advanced HVAC system to optimize energy efficiency and reduce emissions. McCarthy Building Companies broke ground on the fast-track project in October of 2016.
