Savannah River National Lab Builds Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative at USC Aiken

Published 5/14/2024

Savannah River National Laboratory is constructing the Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC) on the campus of the University of South Carolina Aiken. Designed by Page and STOA Architects, the $50 million facility will enable the Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management to engage in shared discovery with academic institutions, industry partners, and government agencies at the city, state, and federal level. The 60,000-sf innovation hub will feature specialized environments for the development of next-generation technologies for chemical and material production. Core focus areas will include robotics, automation, additive manufacturing, computational chemistry, process imaging and intensification, and remote and autonomous systems.

Sited next to the proposed National Guard Cybersecurity Readiness Center, the AMC will serve as an iconic campus gateway offering technology-rich labs for bench research, computation, and industrial engineering. The highly flexible structure will include high bay spaces, a large multipurpose classroom, open offices, and conference rooms of various sizes. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the sustainably designed building will leverage an interactive staircase and myriad informal meeting zones to encourage knowledge exchange between agencies.
