Pepperdine University is constructing the Mountain at Mullin Park, a vibrant athletics complex in Malibu, Calif. This dynamic community destination will elevate the student experience with premier fitness and wellness resources to enrich the academic journey and beyond. Designed by Gruen Associates and Perkins&Will, the project is situated on a plateau in the heart of campus residential life and represents an investment of approximately $250 million. A 161,000-sf arena building will accommodate 3,600 spectators for NCAA Division I basketball and volleyball games, or 4,000 attendees for other events, augmented by a 360-degree LED screen to increase engagement. With an amenity-filled clubhouse and two exclusive VIP viewing suites, the facility will also include a green room for speakers, a catering kitchen, a café, and a multi-activity court (MAC) for athletic practice and student recreation. Sophisticated locker rooms and venues for sports medicine will promote optimal player performance.

The adjacent RISE building will house Pepperdine’s Resilience-Informed Skills Education program, which aims to imbue physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual capabilities to successfully navigate life's challenges. Spanning 45,000 sf, this welcoming center will integrate numerous indoor and outdoor settings for conversation, reflection, and exercise. State-of-the-art cardio equipment, resistance machines, and free weights will be located on the first floor, accompanied by studios for yoga and Pilates. The second level will provide cabana-style locker rooms and areas for group fitness. Offices for RISE counselors and campus recreation services will occupy the third story, complemented by study spaces, a lounge, and an instructional room for training sessions focused on student wellbeing.

Offering inspiring ocean views, a multilevel central plaza will serve as an ideal environment for large gatherings, small group study, or individual relaxation. Targeting LEED Silver sustainable design certification, the Mountain at Mullin Park will incorporate rooftop terraces and native, drought-tolerant plantings. Ground was broken on the complex in September of 2023 and completion is anticipated in fall of 2026. The project team includes Clark Construction, KPFF Consulting Engineers, Martin/Martin, Morley Builders, and SunSteel LLC.
