Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center is engaged in a major expansion and renovation of its campus in Plains Township, Pa. The $900 million project will optimize the delivery of crucial services and transform healthcare access throughout the region. The centerpiece of the initiative is an 11-story patient tower featuring entirely private patient rooms. Designed by Francis Cauffman Architects (FCA), this world-class facility will add 144 new beds, with 58 medical/surgical beds, increasing total capacity from 356 to 500.
Over 100,000 sf of space in the existing hospital will undergo renovation to provide leading-edge surgical suites, inpatient units, procedure rooms, and improved accommodations for medical residents. Other upgrades will include six new operating rooms, 24 ICU beds, further clinical settings, and additional critical care venues. The emergency department will be reimagined and enlarged with 22 new treatment rooms, three trauma bays, and dedicated space for behavioral health patients. The modernization of the Richard and Marion Pearsall Heart Hospital will replace two cardiac catheterization labs, as well as creating new imaging suites and two structural heart rooms for valve procedures.
Nearly doubling the size of the existing medical center, the visionary development will bring advanced capabilities comparable to major academic medical centers in large metropolitan areas. Turner Construction is the general contractor for the project, which broke ground in June of 2024. The patient tower and the emergency department are slated to open in early 2028, with renovations continuing through 2030.
