Oregon Health & Science University Opens Vista Pavilion

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) opened the Vista Pavilion in April of 2026 as an extension to its Marquam Hill campus in Portland. Designed by NBBJ, the $650 million facility provides 128 dedicated beds for complex oncology treatment led by Knight Cancer Institute experts. Four floors are now operational, and future plans will add 56 inpatient beds as well as an entire floor for interventional radiology and imaging. Laboratory venues will enable leading-edge clinical trials to advance the development of new therapies. Once fully built out, the specialized structure will expand OHSU Hospital’s capacity by approximately one third, improving regional access to cardiovascular, neurological, and other types of health care. 

The 14-story tower is linked by three pedestrian sky bridges to Kohler Pavilion and the existing hospital. Integrating light-filled public areas, calming spaces, and a central garden, the 530,000-sf hub embodies a wraparound model by consolidating care in a single building to transform the patient experience. The innovative extension of positive pressure environments beyond rooms and into hallways allows immunocompromised occupants to move safely throughout each floor.

Targeting LEED Silver, the sustainable facility was delivered using lower-carbon concrete mixes and healthy interior materials. An estimated 90 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills, and a green roof assists in stormwater management. 

General contractor Skanska USA leveraged prefabrication, modular assembly, and just-in-time delivery strategies to streamline and accelerate the construction process. The project team included Stantec as MEP engineer, KPFF as civil engineer, MKA as structural engineer, and Mayer/Reed as landscape architect. Ground was broken in January of 2022.
