University of South Carolina Plans School of Medicine

The University of South Carolina is planning to begin construction in 2025 on the School of Medicine Columbia. Serving as the centerpiece of a $300 million campus, the 300,000-sf facility will feature active learning classrooms, extensive medical simulation spaces, interdisciplinary laboratories, and a health science library. An adjoining biomedical research wing will advance the creation of novel therapies and treatments, with a central landscaped courtyard offering settings for informal exchange.

Ohio State’s Pelotonia Research Center Emphasizes Interdisciplinarity

The vision of biomedical research as a collective effort is resoundingly clear in the $237.5 million Pelotonia Research Center, the first building to be completed in the 350-plus-acre Carmenton district on the campus of The Ohio State University (Ohio State) in Columbus. Opened in May 2023, the center integrates almost 100,000 sf of wet labs, 25,000 sf of computational labs, and 20,000 sf of core labs in a single facility designed to host interdisciplinary collaborations and public-private initiatives that focus on solving some of the most critical health challenges. With life science as the backbone of the research endeavor, current projects range from modeling cancer progressions to 3D printing of patient-specific anatomic models.

Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre Opens in Calgary

The Province of Alberta opened the $1.4 billion Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre in October of 2024. Designed by Stantec and DIALOG, the state-of-the art complex provides 2 million sf of space for research, treatment, and educational services. This hub for world-class oncology care and innovation offers 100 patient exam rooms, 12 radiation vaults, 90 chemotherapy seats, and over 160 inpatient beds.

UC San Francisco Breaks Ground on Bakar Research and Academic Building

The University of California broke ground in September of 2024 on the Barbara and Gerson Bakar Research and Academic Building in San Francisco. Located on UCSF's Parnassus Heights campus, the $842 million facility was designed by HGA and Snøhetta to foster interdisciplinary discovery. The 323,000-gsf structure will feature advanced laboratories for programs in oncology, microbiology, diabetes, immunology, and cell biology.

Aviva Investors Constructs Cambridge Life Sciences Facility

Aviva Investors is constructing the 60,000-sf Sidney Sussex Building in Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Located at the Chesterford Research Park, the 60,000-sf life sciences facility will provide 10 individual laboratory environments in an inspiring natural setting. Each fully fitted suite will include open office areas and wet lab space equipped with benches, sinks, and fume hoods, supported by a dedicated plant room located on the same level. A floor of shared conference venues will promote collaboration and exchange.

Designed by Kahler Slater and CannonDesign, the 163,400-sf facility features technology-rich laboratories that integrate both teaching and research functions in a highly collaborative layout. Offering lecture halls, classrooms, and group study venues, the four-story structure provides numerous interaction areas with integrated whiteboards and a variety of seating options.

UC San Francisco Plans Life Sciences Building

The University of California is planning to construct the UCSF Life Sciences Building as part of a major redevelopment of the former Dogpatch Power Station in San Francisco. The transformative facility will bring research, innovation, primary and specialty care clinics, and world-class cancer treatment to a new waterfront destination. Standing eight stories above ground, the structure will include two basement levels for a state-of-the-art proton therapy center that will begin operations in 2029.

After a 2017 fire sped up the timeline for construction of a new science building, University of Delaware faculty and staff needed to make hard choices about how the building should be organized and what features and facilities it should include. Politically, the easiest path would have been to divide the space by department, but Peter Krawchyk, the university’s vice president of facilities and university architect, had a different idea of how to make the decision, one he argued would work better: “We didn’t begin with any kind of programming—number of principal investigators, fume hood counts, or anything like that. We began with ideas and culture.”

Texas Tech University Opens Academic Sciences Building

Texas Tech University opened the $112.5 million Academic Sciences Building in Lubbock in August of 2024. Enhancing the student experience with new venues for active learning and exchange, the 130,000-sf facility was designed by BGK Architects and EYP Architecture & Engineering (now a Page company). The three-story structure provides teaching and laboratory space for five departments: chemistry and biochemistry, physics and astronomy, biological sciences, geosciences, and psychological sciences.
