Providence Health Care is constructing the new St. Paul’s Hospital at the Jim Pattison Medical Campus in Vancouver. Designed by HDR and Stantec, the CAD 2.18 billion (USD 1.59 billion) building will integrate leading-edge technology to expand access to care and elevate patient outcomes. The 11-story replacement facility will span over 2 million sf, and will accommodate an emergency department, a critical care unit, a maternal newborn unit, and birthing suites, as well as spaces dedicated to heart and lung conditions, HIV/AIDS, kidney care, and indigenous health. Uniting acute care, teaching, and research functions, the 548-bed hospital will provide a comprehensive array of services including surgery, interventional procedures, outpatient treatment, mental health, and outreach and community care.
Single-patient rooms will be accompanied by areas for wellness, rejuvenation, and spiritual support. Incorporating a senior-friendly layout, the vibrant facility will offer interior settings filled with natural light, complemented by an outdoor plaza and an 800-meter wellness walk. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the sustainable development will feature integrated heat recovery systems, rooftop rain gardens, and resiliency measures to address natural disasters and the projected rise in sea levels. PCL Construction broke ground on the project in March of 2021 and completion is slated for 2027.
A two-story skybridge will connect the new St. Paul's Hospital to the Clinical Support and Research Centre (CSRC) to fuel the exchange of ideas and strengthen synergies among scientists and practitioners. This 370,000-sf structure will house specialty medical offices and clinics, space for research programs, and an innovation hub. Designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects and Kirsten Reite Architecture, the CSRC will create a sandbox environment for testing and prototyping new discoveries. Wet labs, dry labs, and biobanks will be augmented by a maker space and venues for 3D printing. Occupancy is expected in 2029.
