The University of Massachusetts Amherst opened the $43 million School of Public Health and Health Sciences Hub in May of 2026 to drive innovation, interdisciplinary discovery, and student success. Consolidating the school’s six departments from seven disparate locations across campus, the 26,800-sf facility was designed by Leers Weinzapfel Associates to support contemporary approaches to team-based learning. Flexible classrooms of varying sizes are accompanied by seminar rooms, open collaboration areas, and advising offices. Serving as a gathering and study space, a double-height commons featuring exposed mass timber construction overlooks an exterior plaza, which doubles as an event venue and connects to the Department of Kinesiology.

Targeting LEED Gold, the sustainable structure has a projected EUI of 29 kBTU/sf and is expected to achieve an 82 percent reduction compared to baseline energy use. Net-zero-ready, all-electric systems are complemented by a high-performance envelope and bird-friendly triple glazing that leverages deep vertical fins to provide passive solar and glare control. The light-filled, biophilic development prioritizes occupant wellbeing, with 92 percent of interior spaces offering views of the surrounding landscape or sky. Building material selection emphasized Red List Free products while minimizing the use of plastics. Outside, a landscaped bioretention system manages stormwater runoff and improves water quality.
