Coriell Institute for Medical Research Renovates Camden Laboratories
The Coriell Institute for Medical Research will begin construction in April of 2008 on a $6 million renovation of its genetic research facility in Camden, N.J. The project will include renovation of 21,500-sf on the second and third floors of the five-story building and $50,000 of improvements to cell culture laboratories on the fourth floor. The duration of construction is estimated at 18 months.

USAMRIID Constructs Fort Detrick Steam Sterilization Plant
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers selected John C. Gremberg Co. of Rockville to construct a $27 million steam sterilization plant at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md. Sited adjacent to the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) facility, the plant will utilize high temperature steam to sterilize liquid biowaste from the USAMRIID laboratories at a capacity of 126,000 gallons per day. Completion is slated for April 2011.
University of Michigan Dedicates Lurie Nanofabrication Facility
The University of Michigan dedicated the Robert H. Lurie Nanofabrication Facility at the School of Engineering in Ann Arbor on April 12, 2008. Designed by SmithGroup, the project is a 32,000-sf addition to the existing Solid State Electronics Laboratory (SSEL) cleanroom facility. Featuring a three-level cleanroom concept, the project includes a fab, sub-fab, and mechanical space.
University of Virginia Breaks Ground on Clinical Cancer Center
University of Virginia Health System broke ground on the 150,000-sf Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center in Charlottesville on April 12, 2008. The $74 million, five-story comprehensive cancer center is slated for completion in mid-2011. The technology-rich outpatient facility will include space for clinical trials in a sustainably-designed facility featuring natural lighting and garden spaces. The center will be built to accommodate advances in areas such as genetic diagnosis and analysis, informatics, and molecular biology.
