Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Nears Completion of New Laboratories
Construction of two new laboratories and a central energy plant upgrade for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is nearing completion on its Quisset Campus in Woods Hole, Mass. One laboratory, the 32,000-sf marine research facility, was constructed primarily for researchers to study marine mammals and their environment. The second new building is a 35,000-sf biogeochemistry laboratory to study organic materials in the marine environment. The two laboratories increase the Institution's scientific research space by more than 20 percent.
Brookhaven National Lab Breaks Ground on Center for Functional Nanomaterials
Brookhaven National Laboratory celebrated the groundbreaking of the 94,500-sf Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) in Upton, N.Y., in October of 2005. Designed by HDR Architecture of Alexandria, Va., and constructed by E.W. Howell Co. of Woodbury, N.Y., the $81-million CFN is one of five Nanoscale Science Research Centers to be constructed at Department of Energy national laboratories. The construction cost of the facility is $38 million.
University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine Constructs Teaching and Research Facility
The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine is constructing a five-story, 123,974-sf facility in the University City district of Philadelphia. Slated for completion in fall of 2006, the $70-million Vernon and Shirley Hill Pavillion will house teaching and research space, surgery centers, labs, and a vivarium.
Syracuse University Builds $107-million Life Sciences Complex
Syracuse University is broke ground in April of 2006 on the $107-million Life Sciences Complex, an addition to the Center for Science and Technology (CST) on the college's Syracuse, N.Y., campus. Slated to open in fall 2008, the facility will double CST's existing footprint by adding up to 210,000 sf of laboratory and classroom space.
North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health Systems Plans $40-Million Research Lab
North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System is planning to construct a $40-million research laboratory in Manhasset, N.Y. Ground will be broken on the four-story, 55,658-sf facility in November 2005. Sited on the 57.8-acre North Shore University Hospital Campus, the new wing will increase the footprint and research capacity of the existing Boas-Marks Biomedical Research Pavilion. Completion is expected in two years.
