University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Consolidates with New Office Building
The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is planning to construct a 730,000-sf office building in Houston. The $145-million facility will be called Faculty Center and will consolidate faculty, academic departmental space, and administrative functions currently housed in leased locations beyond the M.D. Anderson campus. The Research Medical Library will also be relocated to the new building. Construction will begin on the 21-story facility in November 2005 with occupancy expected in spring 2008.
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Constructs Charlestown Facility
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Partners HealthCare , will invest approximately $100 million to construct a new facility at the Navy Yard in Charlestown. Designed by Perkins & Will, the 150-bed rehabilitation hospital will include research and conference space, underground parking, and an indoor aquatics center. Completion is expected in 2009 to 2010.
FedEx Utilizes Massive Solar Array at Oakland Facility
FedEx's 350,000-sf facility at Oakland International Airport in California may be the largest corporate solar-power installation in the state. The 904-kilowatt system is expected to supply 80 percent of the facility's energy needs. Constructed by PowerLight Corp . of Berkeley, Calif., the system has a life expectancy of thirty years. The solar roof system provides thermal insulation and ultraviolet ray protection for the building in addition to generating electricity.
University of Alaska Constructs Biological Research & Diagnostics Facility
The University of Alaska (UAF) is constructing the $19-million Biological Research and Diagnostics Facility on its Fairbanks campus. Slated for completion in July 2006, the 42,000-sf facility will accommodate space for small animal research, necropsy, a diagnostics laboratory, and an incinerator. UAF received a $3.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health in late 2005 to enable the project to reach completion.
Human Genome Sciences Nears Manufacturing Plant Completion
Human Genome Sciences (HGS) is nearing completion of its $250-million manufacturing facility in Rockville, Md. Sited on ten acres on the Belward Research Campus of Johns Hopkins University near HGS' existing headquarters, the 290,000-sf facility will enable HGS to produce several different biotech drugs on a commercial scale including human proteins, antibodies, and fusion proteins created by the joining of two genes. Construction is expected to reach completion by year-end 2005 with validation of the facility to follow in 2006.
