Queen's University Constructs Medical School
Queen’s University will open its $77 million medical school in September of 2011 in Kingston, Ontario. The building features a three-story glass atrium providing abundant natural light. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the advanced teaching and learning facility. The building will house integrated science labs, simulation suites, lecture halls, classrooms, small group learning areas, and administrative offices.
Saint Martin's University Plans Engineering Building
Saint Martin's University will begin construction in summer of 2011 on a $7 million engineering building in Lacey, Wash. Designed by McGranahan Architects of Tacoma, the 21,000-sf facility will act as a teaching tool as well as providing classrooms and labs. LEED Platinum sustainable design certification will be sought for the building, which will include a geothermal heating system and a rooftop photovoltaic array. Completion is expected in fall of 2012.
Purdue University Dedicates Ideas to Innovation Lab
Purdue University dedicated the $1.5 million Lyles Family Ideas to Innovation Laboratory in April of 2011. Located in the Civil Engineering Building on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette, Ind., the facility will support an advanced pedagogy of integrated instruction, experimentation, and computer simulation. The flexible space can be divided into four specialized areas and includes student workstations for simulation of experiments. The laboratory features a glass wall for public display of teaching and research.
Optimizing CAD and BIM to GIS Workflow
CDV Systems has created a novel workflow process to extend CAD and BIM capabilities. So many facilities have made major commitments to CAD and BIM applications and nearly all have found real successes from pre-design all the way to construction. Yet, following this they are often left with non-standardized CAD projects, losses of data due to conversions, and bloated BIM data files. Valuable data can linger as an underused resource. CDV's process remedies concerns about CAD and BIM data conversion and handling issues.
Rice University Dedicates Brockman Hall for Physics
Rice University dedicated the $44.5 million Brockman Hall for Physics in March of 2011. Construction began on the 111,000-sf facility in fall of 2009. The project was supported by $11 million in stimulus funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The four-story building houses advanced laboratories for experimental, theoretical, and applied physics.
