College of the Holy Cross Attains LEED Gold for Integrated Science Complex
College of the Holy Cross attained LEED Gold sustainable design certification for the $64 million Integrated Science Complex in December of 2010. Located in Worcester, Mass., the four-story facility consists of the Park B. and Linda Smith Laboratories, a new four-story building, and the renovated Haberlin Hall. The project includes numerous features that produce an energy savings of more than 52% in cooling and 39% in heating, lowering total energy consumption by more than 31% over industry standard baseline. NIH Proposes National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) proposed the creation of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences in December of 2010. The center was recommended by the the Scientific Management Review Board as part of an initiative to streamline the structure of the NIH. The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences will house existing NIH programs including the National Center for Research Resource's Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA).
University of Wisconsin Builds Second Madison Research Park
The University of Wisconsin will begin construction in 2012 on a second research park in Madison. The project will create 4 million sf of laboratory and technology space. The mixed-use development will include residential and retail space in an innovative urban setting.
Catholic College of Mandeville Breaks Ground on Williamsfield Campus
The Catholic College of Mandeville broke ground in December of 2010 on a $400 million campus in Williamsfield, Jamaica. The facility is sited on 11 acres and will provide state-of-the-art classrooms for 2,000 students.
Mercy Medical Center Opens Mary Catherine Bunting Center
Mercy Medical Center opened the $400 million Mary Catherine Bunting Center in Baltimore in December of 2010. The 20-story hospital provides 259 private patient rooms and 15 surgical suites with robotic technology, videoconferencing, and ceiling-mounted equipment. Garden space comprising 17,000 sf on three floors provides natural cooling for the 686,000-sf facility. The hospital also features a skywalk atrium leading from the Bunting Garage to a two-story lobby. The hospital was designed by Ellerbe Becket and built by Whiting-Turner.
