University of Vermont Dedicates Agricultural Science Building
The University of Vermont dedicated the $55.7 million Jeffords Hall in Burlington on May 22, 2010. The 97,000-sf academic and research facility houses teaching labs, classrooms, offices, and research space. Housing the departments of Plant Biology and Plant and Soil Science, the three-story building will support molecular, ecological, and environmental research and teaching. The project features an underground central steam and chilled water system. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.
National Institutes of Health Announces $1 Billion for Research Facility Projects
The National Institutes of Health National Center for Research Resources announced $1 billion in funding in May of 2010 for the construction and renovation of research facilities. A total of 146 grants were awarded to institutions in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Montana State University Bozeman Renovates Cooley Laboratory
Montana State University Bozeman will begin construction in November of 2010 on a $17 million renovation of Cooley Laboratory. Supported by $14.9 million in federal stimulus funding, the project will create a 31,000-sf research facility for the study of infectious and neurological diseases, select agents, and the application of laser physics to biomedical problems. The project architect is Architects Design Group of Kalispell, Mont. Completion is expected in fall of 2012.
University of Arizona College of Medicine Breaks Ground on Health Sciences Education Building
The University of Arizona College of Medicine broke ground in May of 2010 on the $187 million Health Sciences Education Building. Located on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, the 268,000-sf interdisciplinary facility will provide classrooms, laboratories, pre-clinical training suites, faculty offices, and study areas. The building will also house programs for the UA College of Pharmacy, Northern Arizona University’s College of Health and Human Services, and Arizona State University’s College of Nursing.
Western Michigan University Replaces Sangren Hall
Western Michigan University will break ground in June of 2010 on a $69 million replacement facility for Sangren Hall in Kalamazoo. The academic building will feature technology-rich classrooms and is slated for occupancy in fall of 2012. The facility will include faculty offices, computer labs, and an education library.
