SunEdison Builds Solar Power Plant
SunEdison will construct a 72 megawatt photovoltaic solar power plant near Rovigo, Italy. The facility will be the largest of its kind in Europe and will begin generation in the second half of 2010. The plant will produce enough electricity to power 17,150 homes and avoid 41,000 tons of carbon dioxide output. The facility will be built by Isolux Corsán.
Kishwaukee Community Hospital Builds Cancer Center
Kishwaukee Community Hospital is building a $15.8 million cancer center in DeKalb, Ill. The 26,500-sf building will provide consolidated cancer services in a single location, including medical oncology, radiation therapy, infusion therapy, hematology, and PET/CT scanners for diagnostic imaging. Completion is expected by year-end 2010.
University of Alaska Plans Renewable Energy R&D Center
The University of Alaska Anchorage is planning to construct the $20 million Girdwood Renewable Energy Research and Discovery Center. Supporting research on renewable energy technologies such as small-scale hydropower systems, the project will include field sites for instream hydrokinetic, tidal, and micro-hydropower turbine testing. The center will also house education, training, and testing facilities.
University of Texas at San Antonio Dedicates Applied Engineering and Technology Building
The University of Texas at San Antonio dedicated the $82.5 million Applied Engineering and Technology (AET) Building on March 10, 2010. Designed to support world-class teaching and research in science and engineering, the four-story, 145,440-sf facility provides 36 laboratories, 87 faculty offices, five classrooms, and collaborative study alcoves. The building houses the departments of biomedical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, and astronomy.
UC Davis Opens Stem Cell Research Center
The University of California-Davis opened a $62-million stem cell research facility in March of 2010 on its medical center campus in Sacramento. Construction of the 90,000-sf facility was supported by $20 million in funding from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine. The project included renovation and new construction to create research laboratories and GMP manufacturing space. A total of 54,000 sf is now occupied, with the remainder as shell space for future expansion.
