University of Guelph Plans Centre for Biodiversity Genomics

The University of Guelph is planning to construct the $18 million Centre for Biodiversity Genomics in Guelph, Ontario. Designed by HOK, the facility will house laboratory space for genome sequencing and bar coding. The two-story building will serve as the headquarters for the International Barcode of Life Project (iBOL).

University of Leicester Builds Animal Research Facility

The University of Leicester will begin construction in early summer of 2010 on a £15 million animal research facility in the United Kingdom. The project will provide biomedical research laboratories and vivarium space for mice and rats. Completion is expected in early 2011.

University of Queensland Builds Dairy Research Facility

The University of Queensland will begin construction in May of 2010 on a $6.9 million dairy research and teaching facility on its Gatton campus. The project will include laboratories, classrooms, and space for 250 milking cows. Occupancy is expected in late 2010.

Qiagen Expands in Germantown

Qiagen is expanding its North American headquarters in Germantown, Md., with the addition of 117,000 sf of office and manufacturing space. The project represents an investment of $52 million. Based in the Netherlands, Qiagen is a biotechnology company specializing in sample and assay technologies for the detection, screening, and monitoring of human and veterinary diseases.

Intervet/Schering-Plough Opens Vaccine Manufacturing Plant

Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health opened its expanded veterinary vaccine manufacturing plant in April of 2010. Located in the Netherlands at Biosciences Center Boxmeer, the $22 million project increased production space for bacterial vaccines from 1,500 sm to over 5,500 sm. The cGMP facility includes fermentors, cleanrooms, and biocontainment suites. Construction began on the project in December of 2007.
