Construction Begins on Arizona State Forensic Hospital

The $23 million Arizona State Forensic Hospital is under construction in Phoenix. The 104,000-sf facility will provide 80 inpatient beds and is slated for completion in September of 2011. The facility was designed by Cannon Design and Jacobs Engineering Group and is being built by Gilbane Building Co. The forensic hospital will house testing areas, isolation rooms, a security center, and dining facilities for patients who are charged with criminal behavior but are too mentally ill to stand trial.

University of Southern Mississippi Constructs Science Building

The University of Southern Mississippi will begin construction in fall of 2010 on a $7.6 million science building on its Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. Slated for completion in spring of 2012, the 33,580-sf facility will provide laboratories for biology, chemistry, and marine science as well as faculty offices, research space, and classrooms. The design architect for the project is Allred Architectural Group.

Applied Materials Opens Tainan Manufacturing Center

Applied Materials opened its expanded Tainan Manufacturing Center in Taiwan in March of 2010. The 15,000-sm facility will produce flat-panel and thin-film solar products. Applied Materials is based in Santa Clara, Calif., and is expanding its footprint in Asia with additional facilities in Singapore and Xi’an, China.

Bangor University Designs Arts and Innovation Center

Bangor University is designing a £35 million arts and innovation center in Bangor, Wales. The Pontio Project will house instructional facilities, an innovation hub, and performance spaces. The center is being designed by architectural firm Grimshaw and will include a 450-seat theater, rehearsal studios, and cinema space. The innovation hub will provide research and development space for projects ranging from new business technologies to health research. The facility is supported by £15 million of Welsh Assembly government funding.

Piedmont Healthcare Builds Replacement Hospital

Piedmont Health will begin construction in May of 2010 on a $94 million replacement hospital in Newnan, Ga. The nine-story, 362,500-sf facility will provide 136 beds, eight operating rooms, and an emergency department. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. The architect of record is Perkins+Will with KBR Building Group as the general contractor. Completion is expected in early 2012.
