Rady Children's Hospital Builds Patient Care Pavilion
Rady Children’s Hospital and Health Center is building the $260 million Patient Care Pavilion in Kearney Mesa, Calif. Ground was broken on the project in December of 2007. Designed by Anshen + Allen of San Francisco, the 279,000-sf facility will provide 72 private patient rooms, 84 medical-surgical beds, 16 operating rooms, a neonatal ICU, and a cancer center. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.
NIST Launches Competition for Research Facility Construction Grants
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) opened a new competition for grants in March of 2010 for the construction of new or expanded scientific research facilities for measurement science, oceanography, atmospheric research, or telecommunications. A total of $50 million is available for the cost-sharing grants and it is expected that three to five projects will be awarded grants of $10 to $15 million each.
Haffkine Builds BSL-3 Lab
Haffkine will open a BSL-3 laboratory for H1N1 testing in August of 2010. The renovated facility is located in Mumbai and represents a government investment of Rs 4.5 crore (Rs 450M or $9.8M).
University of Utah Plans Center for Cell and Genome Science
The University of Utah is planning to renovate the George Thomas Building in Salt Lake City to house the Center for Cell and Genome Science. Construction will begin on the $75 million project in 2012. The completed facility will be named the Gary L. and Ann S. Crocker Science Center and will provide classrooms, laboratories, and administrative offices for the College of Science.
Rutgers University Builds Center for Integrative Proteomics Technologies
Rutgers University is building the $47 million Center for Integrative Proteomics Technologies on its Busch campus in Piscataway, N.J. Construction began on the 70,000-sf facility in November of 2009 with completion expected in October of 2011. The four-story protein research facility will bring together the BioMaPS Institute for Quantitative Biology, the Protein Data Bank, and branches of the National Institutes of Health’s Protein Structure Initiative structural genomics project.
