Ivy Tech Community College Expands Downtown and Cowan Road Campuses

Ivy Tech Community College will invest $43 million to renovate and expand facilities on two campuses. The $17.2 million Downtown North Building in Muncie will be constructed to accommodate the Culinary Arts program, which will feature a chocolates laboratory, a café, testing and assessment rooms, and student services. A $12.7 million upgrade of the Fisher Building will build out the fourth floor to house the School of Nursing and the School of Health Sciences, with teaching labs sited on a renovated basement level. A new south entrance will also be created.

University of Nottingham Constructs Third Phase of Centre for Biomolecular Sciences

The University of Nottingham began construction in March of 2018 on the third phase of the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences (CBS) in the United Kingdom. Located on the University Park Campus, the five-story 65,000-sf facility will provide biomedical research labs for the study of cancer and cardiovascular, respiratory, bone, and liver diseases. Designed by Benoy to promote collaboration by collocating researchers in one purpose-built structure, the center will include pedestrian bridges to the Boots Science Building and the existing CBS complex.

Angelo State University Opens Archer College of Health and Human Services

Angelo State University opened the $26 million Archer Health and Human Services Building in April of 2018 in San Angelo, Texas. Designed by PBK Architects, the three-story, 50,000-sf facility provides flexible lecture rooms, teaching labs, classrooms, a simulation training center, and faculty and administrative offices. The project includes a new academic testing center and houses the departments of nursing, physical therapy, and psychology. Construction began on the facility in December of 2016.

University of Otago Constructs Animal Research Facility

The University of Otago is constructing a NZD$50 million animal research building on its south campus in Dunedin, New Zealand. Located near the School of Medicine, the five-story, 42,367-sf facility will feature advanced technologies to optimize the welfare of the mice, rats, guinea pigs, birds, and pigs utilized in the University's research programs. Construction began in August of 2016 and completion is expected in early 2019.

Marquette University Plans Physician Assistant Building

Marquette University is planning to build an $18.5 million facility for its physician assistant program in Milwaukee. Designed by HGA and Groth Design Group, the 44,000-sf building will accommodate sophisticated classrooms, teaching labs, and clinical simulation rooms. The project will enable the university to address primary care provider shortages and meet increasing enrollment demand. The construction manager is C.D. Smith and occupancy is expected in summer of 2019.

Kaleida Health Opens Oishei Children's Hospital

Kaleida Health opened the $270 million John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital in March of 2018. Located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, the 12-story, 410,000-sf project is a teaching hospital for the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The 185-bed facility is a Level 1 pediatric trauma center, housing a 64-bed neonatal ICU with private rooms, a pediatric ICU with 20 private rooms, and a labor and delivery department.

Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

The new Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo returns UB’s medical school to downtown Buffalo and allows it to increase enrollment by 25 percent, with the goal of pursuing breakthroughs in biomedical research and transforming healthcare in Western New York. Three research floors are sandwiched between the classroom and lecture hall areas on the lower floors—which include a transit hub on the ground floor—and the more specialized teaching spaces on the upper stories. Deliberately positioned as a gateway to the medical campus, two L-shaped structures are linked by a six-story, light-filled atrium featuring multiple collaboration areas.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Plans Academic Medical Complex

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will develop a new academic medical complex by transforming the former Columbia St. Mary hospital campus in Milwaukee. Designed by Kahler Slater, the $80 million project includes the renovation of 470,000 sf in several buildings to accommodate programs for the College of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences, the School of Information Studies, and Student Health Services.

Allegheny Health Network and Highmark Health Plan AHN Cancer Institute Academic Center

Allegheny Health Network and Highmark Health are planning to build the $80 million AHN Cancer Institute Academic Center in Pittsburgh. Located on the north side of Allegheny General Hospital, the 90,000-sf facility will house research and clinical space, including 49 chemotherapy infusion bays, advanced radiation oncology suites, and conference and exam rooms with telemedicine capabilities. The building will have two floors above ground, two floors below grade, and will be connected to the hospital's conference center and front rotunda entrance.

Wexford Partners with Arizona State University on Phoenix Research Building

Wexford Science & Technology is partnering with Arizona State University to create a 200,000-sf research building in Phoenix. Representing an expansion of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, the seven-story building will be owned by Wexford, with ASU investing $40 million in the first phase of development and leasing approximately half of the structure. The remaining research space will be occupied by private companies and industry partners. Completion is expected in 2019.

UC San Diego Health Opens Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion

UC San Diego Health opened the $140 million Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion in March of 2018 in La Jolla. The 156,000-sf facility offers integrated translational medicine and clinical care in a single location, with multidisciplinary teams of specialists and comprehensive patient services collocated to support every phase of treatment. Designed by CO Architects, the pavilion houses eight surgical suites, basic and advanced imaging technologies, infusion and apheresis services, and the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center.

Texas A&M University System Breaks Ground on RELLIS Academic Building

The Texas A&M University System broke ground in March of 2018 on a $42 million academic building in Bryan, Texas. Located on the RELLIS campus, the three-story, 68,000-sf facility will provide ten classrooms, over 40 faculty offices, collaboration and group learning spaces, and teaching labs for allied health and upper-division science courses. Completion is expected in June of 2019. The project is part of the planned 112,460-sf RELLIS Academic Complex which will accommodate 2,500 students upon completion.

The University of Minnesota broke ground in February of 2018 on the $109 million Health Sciences Education Center in Minneapolis. Designed by Perkins+Will and The S/L/A/M Collaborative to support interprofessional education, the project includes the creation of a new 142,100-sf facility and renovation of 52,000 sf of existing space.
