Energy Use Reduction

The University of Virginia has reduced the annual operating cost of Clark Hall by $1.2 million by optimizing the facility's energy performance. Located in Charlottesville, Clark Hall originally opened in 1932 and houses the Department of Environmental Sciences and the Charles L. Brown Science & Engineering Library. A team of UVA engineers, technicians, and specialists called Delta Force reviewed and retrofitted the building's systems and equipment to create a 67 percent savings on annual energy costs.

Boston University will begin construction in spring of 2020 on the 350,000-sf Data Sciences Center. The 17-story facility will be located on the Charles River Campus and will collocate the departments of statistics, mathematics, and computer science. The center will feature terraced platforms with whiteboard walls and a collaboration ramp to promote interaction and innovation. The structure is comprised of a four-story podium topped by 13 floors, with MEP systems located in additional basement and penthouse levels.

Octapharma celebrated the opening of a $27 million pharmaceutical R&D facility on its Vienna campus in October of 2018. Designed by ATP to provide optimal flexibility, the six-story, 68,470-gsf structure offers 48,438 assignable square feet of laboratory, office, meeting, and collaboration space. The sustainable facility utilizes advanced building systems with heat recovery technologies. Octapharma is also constructing a $45 million pilot plant at the site which is slated for completion in late 2018.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine opened the $305 million Health Sciences Facility III in Baltimore in October of 2018. Designed by HOK and Design Collective, the 11-story, 435,000-sf building provides wet and dry labs for biomedical research, an imaging suite, offices, collaboration spaces, and conference and seminar rooms. Accommodating 400 faculty and staff members, the facility houses over 15 research teams engaged in the study of oncology, cardiology, neurology, genomics, and regenerative medicine.

California State University, Chico broke ground on a $101 million physical sciences building in October of 2018. Providing teaching labs for chemistry, physics, and geology, the four-story, 110,200-sf STEM facility will house active learning classrooms, graduate research studios, collaboration spaces, administrative and faculty offices, and an interactive lab for elementary school programs.

The University of Birmingham opened the £40 million Collaborative Teaching Laboratory in October of 2018 in the United Kingdom. Designed by Sheppard Robson to support team-based, experiential learning, the three-story, 72,120-sf facility accommodates STEM programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The interdisciplinary building provides an e-lab, a wet lab, a dry lab, and a discovery zone with interactive media displays on the ground floor.

South Dakota State University broke ground in October of 2018 on the $46.1 million Raven Precision Agriculture Center in Brookings. The 129,000-sf facility will provide collaborative classrooms and laboratories for the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and the College of Engineering. Accommodating sophisticated instrumentation for data analytics and leading-edge farm equipment, the building will include flexible research areas for academic and industry partners.

The University of California, Irvine opened the $67 million Anteater Learning Pavilion in October of 2018. Designed by LMN Architects, the dedicated active learning facility includes the two-story Pavilion which houses a 250-seat lecture hall and a 400-seat lecture hall with double-tier seating. A central circulation structure called the Bridge provides connectivity to a three-story wing offering classrooms, offices, computer labs, and a student mixing hall.

Columbia University opened The Forum in September of 2018 in New York. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with Dattner Architects as executive architect, the 56,000-sf facility provides a 437-seat auditorium, conference and breakout rooms, collaboration spaces, and faculty offices. Acting as the gateway to the new Manhattanville campus, the triangular-shaped building offers flexible multiuse spaces and a 4,200-sf café on the ground floor to promote community engagement.

Arizona State University opened the $120 million Biodesign Institute Building C in September of 2018 in Tempe. Designed by ZGF Architects and BWS Architects, the five-story, 191,000-sf project features wet labs for chemistry, engineering, and biological sciences arranged in collaborative neighborhoods.

Western Colorado University began construction in September of 2018 on the 75,000-sf Rady School of Computer Science and Engineering in Gunnison. Created in partnership with the University of Colorado and funded by a donation of $80 million, the facility will provide sophisticated instrumentation suites, laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls, collaboration spaces, faculty offices, and a central gallery with a canted glass curtainwall. Farnsworth Group is providing architectural, MEP, structural, and landscape design services.

Rutgers University opened the $115 million Chemistry and Chemical Biology Building in September of 2018 in Piscataway, N.J. Designed by Flad Architects to promote multidisciplinary collaboration, the four-story, 144,000-sf facility offers core facilities including a microscopy suite, a Class 100 chemistry cleanroom, and labs for optical spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point opened the $75 million Chemistry Biology Building in September of 2018. The four-story, 176,500-sf facility was designed by HOK and Potter Lawson to put science on display and provides 58 research and teaching labs. The building offers flexible instructional spaces for STEM programs including two 98-seat lecture halls, three 48-seat classrooms, and two 24-seat classrooms.

The University of California, Irvine broke ground in September of 2018 on the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building. Designed by LMN Architects to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration, the six-story, 204,750-sf facility will house the Samueli School of Engineering, the Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Science, and the School of Physical Sciences.

Oregon Health & Science University opened the $190 Knight Cancer Institute in September of 2018 on the South Waterfront Campus in Portland. Designed by SRG Partnership to foster multidisciplinary collaboration, the seven-story, 320,000-sf facility provides biomedical laboratories, administrative offices, interaction hubs, core labs, a 200-seat auditorium, and space for clinical trials. Featuring an integrated balance of wet and dry research spaces, the building accommodates programs in computational biology, early cancer detection, and immuno-oncology.
