University of Redlands Plans Mixed-Use District

The University of Redlands is planning to construct the 30-acre University Village adjacent to its existing campus in Redlands, Calif. Moore Ruble Yudell has been selected as the architect and planner for the public-private development, which is being created in collaboration with REACH Redlands LLC, a joint venture of Republic MetropolitanCreative Housing Associates, and Arteco Partners.

Fitzsimons Innovation Community Breaks Ground on Cell and Gene Therapy Center

The Fitzsimons Innovation Community broke ground in August of 2021 on Bioscience 5 in Aurora, Colo. Strategically located next to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, the 90,000-sf building will enable biomedical and pharmaceutical tenants to manufacture next-generation cell and gene therapy products on a commercial scale. Saunders Construction is the general contractor for the highly flexible facility, which is slated for occupancy in spring of 2022.

Salt Lake Community College and University of Utah Create Juniper Canyon Campus

The University of Utah and Salt Lake Community College broke ground in July of 2021 on a $57 million shared facility in Herriman. The 90,000-sf structure will accommodate associate and bachelor’s degree programs in high-demand fields such as computer science, engineering, business administration, criminal justice, nursing, social work, and teaching. The structure will also incorporate student services centers for both institutions including admissions, financial aid, advising, tutoring, and transfer support.

GE Aviation Builds Advanced Manufacturing Center

GE Aviation broke ground in June of 2021 on an advanced manufacturing center in Beavercreek, Ohio. Sited on 53 acres in the Miami Valley Research Park, the 280,000-sf structure will enable the development and production of gas turbine engine components and mechanical systems for a variety of industries, including aviation, space, defense, oil, and gas. Integrating high-performance glazing and insulated concrete wall panels, the steel-framed facility will leverage lean manufacturing technologies to optimize efficiency and reduce waste.

Ferris State University Plans Center for Virtual Learning

Ferris State University will begin construction in May of 2021 on the $29.5 million Center for Virtual Learning in Big Rapids, Mich. Designed by Stantec, the 64,000-sf facility will provide a centralized home for the university's online education activities. Accommodating current and future advances in virtual learning approaches, the project will feature unique adaptable environments for digital content creation and instruction.

Oxford Properties Expands Life Sciences Portfolio

Canadian developer Oxford Properties has expanded its real estate portfolio in the United States with the acquisition of four new assets. Representing an investment of $276 million in the burgeoning life sciences industry, the purchase included a total of 415,000 sf of existing space and associated developable land. Oxford Properties plans to spend an additional $500 million to repurpose, renovate, and expand the four structures to create leading-edge lab and office environments for biomedical tenants.

The Ohio State University Plans Inpatient Hospital at Wexner Medical Center

The Ohio State University is planning to construct a $1.79 billion inpatient hospital at Wexner Medical Center in Columbus. Providing 820 beds in private rooms, the 1.9 million-sf complex will integrate exceptional patient care environments with leading-edge facilities for research, medical education, and clinical training. Designed by HDR, the hospital will include an emergency department, surgical suites, an imaging center, a neonatal intensive care unit, and a 1,900-space parking garage.

Drexel University Partners with Wexford Science+Technology on Health Science Tower

Drexel University is partnering with Wexford Science+Technology to create the Drexel Academic Tower in Philadelphia. Construction began in July of 2020 on the structure, which will provide Drexel with 450,000 sf of rented space in the University City district. The College of Nursing and Health Professions will be located in the building, with classes beginning in fall of 2022.

UC Davis Health Consolidates Administrative Offices to Enhance Efficiency and Collaboration

UC Davis Health will renovate an existing 194,000-sf facility to provide consolidated administrative space in Rancho Cordova, Calif. Designed by Stantec, the $48 million project will enhance efficiency for several operational groups by creating a central collaborative location. Offering flexible workstation environments, focus rooms, huddle areas, conference rooms, and gathering spaces, the building will accommodate employees working in human resources, finance, revenue, information technology, and executive leadership.

Fitwel Launches Viral Response Module

Fitwel launched its Viral Response module in July of 2020. The platform provides annual, third-party building certification of policies and practices informed by the latest public health research on mitigating the spread of infectious diseases. Fitwel, a healthy building certification system operated by The Center for Active Design, was originally created by the U.S. General Services Administration and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Howard University and Adventist HealthCare Plan Academic Teaching Hospital

Howard University is partnering with Adventist HealthCare to create a $450 million academic teaching hospital in Washington, D.C. Featuring a Level I trauma center, the 600,000-sf, 225-bed complex will offer state-of-the-art facilities for patient care and medical education. An adjacent building housing clinical offices will also be constructed. Completion is expected in 2025 or 2026.
