The University of Arizona began construction in October of 2021 on a $42 million renovation and expansion of the historic Old Chemistry Building in Tucson. Designed by Shepley Bulfinch and Poster Mirto McDonald, the project will provide the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry with 55,000 sf of renovated space featuring four new collaborative classrooms, three teaching studios for online instruction, a visualization cave for immersive virtual learning, and technology-rich research labs.

The University of Kansas (KU) faced a daunting challenge: more than 11 million sf of facilities in 150 buildings whose average age was 45 years and a deferred maintenance backlog exceeding $350 million. At the same time, the university’s strategic plan set a goal of increasing research and discovery, and the resulting campus master plan prioritized the need for new research facilities. Realizing that goal while addressing the existing challenges could have taken decades using traditional funding models. The solution? The Integrated Science Building, KU’s $180 million large-scale public-private partnership (P3) for interdisciplinary campus development, which is breaking new ground in funding models, integration, management structure, and fundraising activities. With this initiative, the university took a “great leap forward” in academic and research programs, design decisions, space allocations, programming, and critical infrastructure upgrades, as well as making a bold step with the project delivery.

Stetson University broke ground in June of 2021 on the Cici & Hyatt Brown Hall for Health & Innovation in DeLand, Fla. Designed by Kahler Slater in association with Harvard Jolly Architecture, the 40,000-sf facility will offer flexible and transparent classrooms for active learning, teaching labs for health and environmental sciences, a GIS computer lab, and a Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) lab.

Indiana Tech broke ground in May of 2021 on a $21.5 million expansion and renovation of Zollner Engineering Center in Fort Wayne. The first phase of the project comprises a 30,000-sf addition that will open in fall of 2022. Renovation of the existing 40,000-sf structure will begin in May of 2022 with occupancy expected in fall of 2023. Classrooms and labs in the center will remain open throughout the project. Academic and research activities will be relocated into the addition to enable the renovation to proceed. 

Nanotronics opened its 45,000-sf headquarters and manufacturing hub in May of 2021 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York. Seamlessly integrating research, development, and production activities, the technology-rich facility supports the creation of smart factory hardware and software that combines robotics, optical microscopy, artificial intelligence, and machine learning platforms.

There is no question that the pandemic has taken a toll on higher education institutions, but they are planning for a future that includes fully engaged students and campuses bustling with activity. A Tradeline survey of 115 colleges and universities and the architectural and engineering firms that serve them shows they are focused on renovation, modernization, and major new construction of everything from life sciences facilities to theaters; 58 percent reported that they have one or two major projects in the planning or pre-planning stages.

The Olivia Business Centre was awarded the highest WELL Health-Safety Rating in March of 2021 by the International WELL Building Institute. Located in Gdańsk, Poland, the eight-building corporate park offers 2.5 million sf of world-class office space and accommodates over 200 companies. Achieving 25 out of 25 available points in all WELL Health-Safety categories, the complex leverages advanced infrastructure to continue operations safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Foghorn Therapeutics completed construction in March of 2021 on its 60,000-sf headquarters in Kendall Square in Cambridge, Mass. Spanning three renovated floors in the 500 Technology Square building, the collaborative facility provides leading-edge environments to support crucial biomedical research including chemistry and biology labs, open offices, conference rooms, and huddle rooms. TRIA designed the fast-track project, which was built by Wise Construction with R.W.

The University of Cincinnati began construction in March of 2021 on a $45.6 million renovation and expansion of Linder Hall to create a new home for the College of Law. Designed by Perkins+Will and BHDP Architecture, the project will repurpose and enlarge the 84,443-sf structure to create a 116,635-sf facility featuring a two-story lobby atrium, three flexible 50-seat classrooms, a 90-seat classroom, and a 160-seat auditorium that can function as an appellate courtroom.

Vibalogics is creating a 110,000-sf facility for the production of oncolytic viruses, viral vector vaccines, and viral vector gene therapy products in Boxborough, Mass. Supporting late-phase clinical and commercial manufacturing operations, the highly flexible structure will include 2,000-liter bioreactors, multiple cGMP production suites, offices, warehouse space, and labs for research, development, and quality control. The $150 million project involves the renovation of an existing R&D building previously occupied by Cisco Systems.

Manchester Metropolitan University began construction in January of 2021 on the Science and Engineering Building in the United Kingdom. Designed by BDP, the seven-story, 160,000-sf facility will provide teaching and research labs, instructional venues, a 200-seat super lab, academic offices, collaboration spaces, self-directed learning areas, and a central atrium.

Western Washington University is planning to construct the $68 million Kaiser Borsari Hall in Bellingham. Designed by Perkins+Will, the 40,000-sf structure will accommodate the school's growing programs in computer science and electrical engineering. The collaborative four-story building will provide experiential learning venues, teaching and research labs, classrooms, offices, breakout areas, a multicultural student lounge, a commons, and a mechanical basement.

As the landscape for academic institutions grows more competitive, determining how human factors impact the design of STEM facilities is becoming a significant consideration when it comes to attracting students and research faculty. As a result, team members at Francis Cauffman Architects are developing a set of metrics to identify and assess the value of design features that influence occupant experience in academic STEM spaces with the goal of creating an index that can be used to inform future renovation and new construction projects. Human factor points are allocated to spaces and design features that have a demonstrated positive impact on student enrollment, result in high levels of user satisfaction, and accommodate the teaching and research goals of the facility. In a post-COVID world, this additional evaluation tool may be more important than ever.

Bowling Green State University dedicated the $44.2 million Robert W. and Patricia A. Maurer Center in September of 2020 in Bowling Green, Ohio. Designed by The Collaborative and Perkins+Will, the 89,800-sf project included the construction of a 50,000-sf addition and the renovation of Hanna Hall to create a new home for the Schmidthorst College of Business.

The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) launched the latest version of the WELL Building Standard in September of 2020. Following two years of extensive development, in-use application, and review, WELL v2 is a vehicle for buildings and organizations to deliver spaces that contribute to improved human health through design strategies, operational protocols, performance standards, and policies that foster a culture of well-being.
