The Children's Hospital at Fitzsimons is developing a new "child-friendly" facility at its $360-million Aurora, Colo., campus. The 1.02-million-sf building will include significant outdoor green space with children's play areas, child-sized countertops in the reception areas and a kids-only area with Internet access, activities, games, and entertainment equipment. The new hospital will focus on family comfort as well, providing private patient rooms with family sleeping accommodations, family storage, private baths, data ports, and desks.

Emory University has selected Boston-based Payette to conduct a feasibility study encompassing a precinct master plan for a replacement medical center for Emory University Hospital, Wesley Woods Hospital, and the Emory Clinic. The project, known as the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, allows for new research facilities to be adjacent to the diagnosis and treatment chassis connecting bench to bed. The first phase of implementation is estimated to be a 600,000-gsf multidisciplinary outpatient clinic and translational research building.

The design of the $60-million Lou Ruvo Alzheimer's Institute has been completed by architect Frank Gehry. The planned five-story, 55,000-sf facility will be sited on 61 acres in downtown Las Vegas. The center will accommodate research and treatment of neurological disorders.

Johns Hopkins will begin construction in 2006 on a $275.5-million children's tower in Baltimore, Md. Part of a new clinical facility, the 12-story, 205-bed tower will house a pediatric trauma center, ten operating rooms, psychiatry, and outpatient cancer care. Funding for the facility will come in part from a $100-million donation recently received by Johns Hopkins. Slated for completion in summer of 2009, the project is currently eight months behind schedule and $190-million over budget due to high construction material costs.

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has selected the joint venture of Barton Malow and P.J. Dick Inc. to serve as general contractor of a new clinical services building that is part of Children's new campus. The construction cost of the facility is approximately $174-million. The partnership between Children's Hospital and UPMC enables UPMC's construction department to oversee the development of the new Children's campus.

The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston is adding approximately 750,000 sf of biomedical research space and outpatient care in a new complex named the Red and Charline McCombs Institute for the Early Detection and Treatment of Cancer.

The University of Virginia Health System is planning to construct three new facilities on its Charlottesville campus: a $25-million translational research facility with laboratories; a $15-million outpatient facility for Children's Hospital; and a $5-million clinical center accommodating cancer care. The facilities are being funded by a $45-million donation from the Ivy Foundation to further biomedical research.

Kaiser Permanente is planning a $200-million replacement hospital and medical office building in Redwood City, Calif. HOK has been selected to design the 212-bed hospital and parking structure with Perkins and Will as the architect for the medical office building. Drawings are expected to reach completion by year-end 2007 with construction to begin in late 2008. The facilities are expected to reach completion by mid-2011.

Carle Foundation Hospital is working with McCarthy to construct a $44-million expansion of its Urbana, Illinois, facility. The three-part project includes: a complex five-story, 108,000-sf vertical addition to the hospital's North Tower; a 23,000-sf expansion and renovation of the emergency department; and a new three-story, 46,000-sf ancillary building. The North Tower addition will add one floor of medical/surgical beds, one floor of NICU, one pediatric floor, and two OB floors. The expansion was designed by HDR of Omaha.

Kaiser Permanente is planning to construct a $600-million replacement hospital on 63 acres in Hayward, Calif. The 300-bed facility will house an emergency department, inpatient care, a medical office building, and an outpatient clinic. The hospital is slated for completion in 2012 in order to meet a state-mandated deadline for seismic rebuilding by January of 2013. The architects for the project are Ellerbe Beckett of Kansas City and Hawley Peterson & Snyder of Mountain View, Calif.

St. Jude Research Hospital is expanding its Memphis campus with the construction of the $114-million Integrated Patient Care and Research Building (IPCRB). Slated for completion in early 2007, the six-story, 300,000-sf building will house inpatient space, research laboratories, diagnostic imaging, and radiation oncology treatment facilities. The second floor will be dedicated to inpatient care with research and office space on the remaining floors.

The Montreal Heart Institute is initiating a $24-million project to expand and renovate its Research Centre in Montreal, Canada. Slated for completion in 2008, the project will expand the south block, known as the Pavillon Jean-Louis Levesque, by 6,125 square meters on three floors. A catheterization and research space will be built, and the first three floors of the south block will be reorganized.

Children's Medical Center in Dallas has initiated an $18-million expansion adjacent to its existing hospital. Designed by HKS Inc., the 142,300-sf building is slated to open in summer of 2006. The construction manager for the project is the Dallas office of Gilbane Building Co.

The University of Tennessee is developing the UT-Baptist Research Park in Memphis, Tenn. The 10-acre campus will consist of 1.2 million sf of bioscience laboratory, education, research, and incubator space.  Baptist Memorial Health Care donated its property in the Memphis Medical District to create the campus. A 924,000-sf building will be imploded to enable new construction to begin in the second quarter of 2006. The project will be built in six phases over ten years.

University of North Carolina Hospitals broke ground in October 2005 on the new North Carolina Cancer Hospital in Chapel Hill. Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership of Seattle is the architect of record for the project with Skanska USA Building of Parsippany, N.J., as general contractor. The seven-story, 320,000-sf clinical building is projected to open in 2009 and will combine cancer treatment and research. The 105,000-sf Physician's Office Building component of the project will open in 2008.
