Providence Newberg Medical Center Completes LEED(R) Gold Hospital

Providence Newberg Medical Center has constructed the first LEED® Gold certified hospital in the United States. Built by Skanska USA Building, the $70 million Newberg, Ore., facility will have repaid its initial "green" investment cost in 14 months, and in just over a year, the hospital will save nearly 26 percent in annual energy expenses.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Plans Research Tower

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) celebrated the groundbreaking on June 2, 2006 of a $400-million research tower in West Philadelphia. Sited on the former Philadelphia Civic Center site, the 558,000-sf, eight-story facility will accommodate translational research and is slated for completion in spring of 2009. The project is the first phase of the larger plan for the $845-million Children's Hospital's South Campus Research Facility which will spread over nearly eight acres across from CHOP's existing facilities.

SUNY University Hospital Plans Vertical Pediatric Expansion

The State University of New York's University Hospital is planning a $118.9-million vertical expansion of its Syracuse facility. The project will consist of a six-story addition constructed on top of the hospital's east wing to house oncology, neurology, and cardiology services, and two floors dedicated to the the Golisano Children's Hospital of Central New York. The project architect is Karlsberger Companies with King and King Architects of Manlius as associate architect.

Oregon Health & Science University Builds Center for Health

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is nearing completion of construction on it's new $145.4-million Center for Health and Healing. The 400,000-sf, mixed-use facility is engineered for a LEED Platinum rating.  OHSU expects to save $700,000 annually in energy and operating costs thanks to the building's "green" features.

University of California San Francisco Builds Diller Family Cancer Research Center

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) broke ground in April 2006 on the Helen Diller Family Cancer Research Building, a five-story, 160,000-sf facility designed by Rafael Vinoly. The building will more than double the space for UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers to focus on a variety of cancers including prostate, kidney,and brain. The UCSF Cancer Research Institute will be housed in the new facility, where research on the basic biological mechanisms of cancer will be carried out in 15 major laboratories.

Clarian Health Partners Dedicates New Pathology Lab

Clarian Health Partners has completed construction of the new 164,000-sf Clarian Pathology Laboratory which will provide diagnostic testing services for Clarian hospitals patients in Central Indiana. BSA LifeStructures and Blackburn Architects as Blackburn BSA LLC designed the $67-million state-of-the-art structure; Wurster/Smoot was the builder.

University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Constructs Faculty Center Tower

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is building a 21-story tower at Houston's Texas Medical Center. Groundbreaking for the 732,000-sf Faculty Center Tower, designed by PageSoutherlandPage, was held on November 11, 2005 with completion expected in the spring of 2008. Faculty Center Tower, which will connect via an above-grade bridge to M. D.

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Completes Women's Pavilion

Construction is complete on the new Sue and Bill Gross Women's Pavilion at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Calif. The $129-million project is McCarthy's ninth for the hospital. The 320,000-sf Women's Pavilion is the single largest construction project undertaken by Hoag Hospital since 1974. The new facility features the latest in healthcare technology, patient comfort, and seismic building safety.

Children's Hospital at Fitzsimons Develops Aurora Campus

The Children's Hospital at Fitzsimons is developing a new "child-friendly" facility at its $360-million Aurora, Colo., campus. The 1.02-million-sf building will include significant outdoor green space with children's play areas, child-sized countertops in the reception areas and a kids-only area with Internet access, activities, games, and entertainment equipment. The new hospital will focus on family comfort as well, providing private patient rooms with family sleeping accommodations, family storage, private baths, data ports, and desks.

Emory University Plans Woodruff Health Sciences Center

Emory University has selected Boston-based Payette to conduct a feasibility study encompassing a precinct master plan for a replacement medical center for Emory University Hospital, Wesley Woods Hospital, and the Emory Clinic. The project, known as the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, allows for new research facilities to be adjacent to the diagnosis and treatment chassis connecting bench to bed. The first phase of implementation is estimated to be a 600,000-gsf multidisciplinary outpatient clinic and translational research building.

The design of the $60-million Lou Ruvo Alzheimer's Institute has been completed by architect Frank Gehry. The planned five-story, 55,000-sf facility will be sited on 61 acres in downtown Las Vegas. The center will accommodate research and treatment of neurological disorders.

Johns Hopkins Constructs Children's Tower

Johns Hopkins will begin construction in 2006 on a $275.5-million children's tower in Baltimore, Md. Part of a new clinical facility, the 12-story, 205-bed tower will house a pediatric trauma center, ten operating rooms, psychiatry, and outpatient cancer care. Funding for the facility will come in part from a $100-million donation recently received by Johns Hopkins. Slated for completion in summer of 2009, the project is currently eight months behind schedule and $190-million over budget due to high construction material costs.

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Constructs Clinical Services Building

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has selected the joint venture of Barton Malow and P.J. Dick Inc. to serve as general contractor of a new clinical services building that is part of Children's new campus. The construction cost of the facility is approximately $174-million. The partnership between Children's Hospital and UPMC enables UPMC's construction department to oversee the development of the new Children's campus.
