Houston Healthcare has selected Gilbane Building Company as the construction manager at-risk for phase I of its master plan to ultimately replace Houston Medical Center, the main hospital campus in Warner Robins, Georgia. Phase I will consist of a new central energy plant, a new four-story bed tower, and renovations to the existing 186-bed facility. The new building will be approximately 134,000 sf including a 30,000-sf basement.
Texas A&M Health Science Center is planning a new Health Science Center on 200 acres in Bryan, Texas. The first phase of the master plan for the site may include three buildings at a cost of $128 million. Fifty of the acres at the Bryan campus will accommodate public/private partnerships. Slated for completion by year-end 2010, the design includes an education building with a possible nursing or pharmacy component and a simulation center allowing medical students to practice treatment on dummies.
Danbury Hospital has initiated construction on its new Outpatient Diagnostic Building in Danbury, Conn. The total project is valued at $44 million. Skanska USA Building is providing construction management services for the 60,000-sf, three story building as well as a new 366-space parking garage.
The University of California, Irvine is constructing a new 480,000-sf academic medical center at its existing medical campus in Orange, Calif. The $371-million hospital will accommodate 191 beds with space for future expansion. Designed by HOK, the seven story plus basement facility will feature 13 operating rooms; three interventional procedure rooms; laboratories; adult, pediatric, and neonatal ICUs; private patient rooms; a burn unit; and a connecting link to the existing tower structure.
The University of Ottawa opened the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre in October of 2006. The tower, comprised of a public hospital and its affiliated research institute, the uOttawa Institute of Mental Health Research, features state-of-the-art laboratories and technology. Construction began on the $132-million, 399,178-sf facility in December of 2004. Housing 188 inpatient beds, the hospital consists of nine three-story inpatient care units with a central open-air garden environment. The seven-story tower houses research, administration, and education.
McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is in the design phase of the development of the Glen Campus in Montreal. To be located on a 43-acre former brownfield site, the nearly $1.6 million (Canadian) redevelopment project will involve the creation of an academic healthcare campus and hospital dedicated to integrated clinical care, research, and teaching.
Emory University has received $261.5 million from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation to fund expansion and renovation of its healthcare and research operations. A $240-million modernization of the outpatient care facilities at the Woodruff Health Sciences Center will enable the implementation of a patient-centered treatment model supported by translational research.
Dartmouth College is planning to construct the C. Everett Koop Medical Science Complex on its Hanover, N.H., campus. The $140 million, 283,085-gsf facility is expected to begin construction in late summer of 2007 and reach initial occupancy in fall of 2009. Designed to foster interaction and collaboration, the Koop Complex will bring together research, patient care, clinical, and academic programs.
St. John's Mercy Heart Hospital opened the doors of its new $140 million cardiovascular facility in Creve Coeur, Mo., in late fall of 2006. The 96-bed, 350,000-sf hospital combines all heart-related services under one roof. Universal patient rooms are fully equipped to handle intensive care patients and are designed to comfortably accommodate overnight stays for family members. The project architect was Christner, Inc. of St. Louis with Northstar Management Co. as program manager.
Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Center opened the 558,000-sf Mortimer B. Zuckerman Research Center in New York in September of 2006. The 23-story, 400-ft high facility was designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership.
Anderson Hospital broke ground on Sept. 29, 2006 on the 20,000-sf Comprehensive Cancer Care Center in Maryville, Ill. The $4.6 million outpatient center will include physician oncology services for both chemotherapy and radiation oncology, sub-specialty physician services, a patient resource center and library, support services including social workers and dietitians who specialize in working with oncology patients, as well as a retail space dedicated to the needs of cancer patients. In addition, the Center will include a comprehensive Breast Care Center.
Adventist Health is planning a $60-million expansion and renovation of its 242-bed St. Helena Hospital in California's Napa Valley. The first $30-million phase of the project will include development of a 25,000-sf Outpatient Services Pavilion, comprised of a 12,500-sf cancer center and an 11,000-sf expanded outpatient surgery center. The Family Birth Center will be relocated and expanded from 3,400 sf to 6,800 sf. A cardiovascular and peripheral vascular lab will also be constructed.
Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center will open a new $24-million research center on its ten-acre Torrey Pines campus in San Diego on November 9, 2006. The 90,000-sf research facility will contain 71,000 sf of dedicated science research space, 54 benches, equipment rooms, and a conference center. Designed by Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker, the research center was constructed by Rudolph & Sletten with Kavanagh Associates as project manager.
Baptist Hospital East has selected the architectural team of Ellerbe Becket and LMH Architects (Laughlin Millea Hillman) to design its new Eastpoint Campus Ambulatory Care Center in Louisville, Ky. The six-story, 185,000-sf facility is slated to begin construction in late spring of 2007 with completion tentatively scheduled for spring of 2009. The first floor will house an outpatient ambulatory surgery center.
The University of Michigan has selected Gilbane Building Company as construction manager for its new 10-story, 215,000-sf academic medical center dedicated to ophthalmology and Type 1 diabetes. Partners include Cambridge architects Stubbins Associates and Clark Construction. The approximate completion date for the $78-million expansion is June 2009. The first three floors are devoted to clinics, the fourth to surgery, and floors five through eight are dedicated to research.
