McMaster University Opens DeGroote Centre of Learning and Discovery

McMaster University opened the $71-million Michael G. DeGroote Centre of Learning and Discovery on Sept. 22, 2005. North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health Systems Plans $40-Million Research Lab

North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System is planning to construct a $40-million research laboratory in Manhasset, N.Y. Ground will be broken on the four-story, 55,658-sf facility in November 2005. Sited on the 57.8-acre North Shore University Hospital Campus, the new wing will increase the footprint and research capacity of the existing Boas-Marks Biomedical Research Pavilion. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Plans Longwood Facility

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is planning to construct a $300-million facility in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area in Boston. The 400,000-sf complex will house research labs and clinical outpatient treatment suites with ground floor retail. Designed by Portland, Ore.-base Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, the facility will increase Dana-Farber's footprint by one-third. Completion is expected by 2011.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center dedicated Phase II of the Hamilton Eye Institute in Memphis, Tenn., on Sept. 26, 2005. The second phase of the $63-million facility is comprised of 28,000 sf of laboratories; 20,000 sf of examination rooms; 10,000 sf of education and training facilities; 8,000 sf of office space; an ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center; and a 99-seat auditorium.

Clemson University Develops Research Incubator

Clemson University is planning to construct a $6-million incubator facility in Pendleton, S.C. Sited in the Clemson Research Park, the 40,000-sf Innovation Center will be located adjacent to Clemson's Advanced Materials Research Laboratory. Additionally, Clemson has allotted $10.3 million in funding to create a research campus for the Clemson University Restoration Institute (CURI) in North Charleston on the former Charleston Naval Base.

Kaiser Plans South San Francisco Cancer Center

Kaiser Permanente is planning to open a $30-million cancer center in South San Francisco. Designed by Emeryville, Calif.-based Ratcliff Architects, the 19,500-sf oncology center will house 12 examination rooms, four linear accelerators, a CT scanner, physician offices, and space for support staff. Redwood City, Calif.-based contractor Rudolph & Sletten is expected to begin construction on the facility in early 2006 and reach completion in the first half of 2007. The center is estimated to treat 1,000 cancer patients annually.

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Constructs Charlestown Facility

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Partners HealthCare , will invest approximately $100 million to construct a new facility at the Navy Yard in Charlestown. UTSW Medical Center Designs Biomedical Research Building

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is designing a new biomedical research building that will be sited on its Dallas campus. Slated to begin construction in May 2006, the $20 million facility will be built by St. Louis-based McCarthy. Perkins & Will is designing the four-story, 75,000-sf building which will have dedicated lab space on the first two floors and shell space on the top two floors. Center for Life Science Boston Breaks Ground

Lyme Properties LLC broke ground on the 705,000-sf Center for Life Science Boston on July 26, 2005. Formerly called the Blackfan Research Center, the $250-million project is slated for completion in 2007. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center will occupy 360,000 sf in the building. Lyme Properties will also construct a second facility, the Longwood North Research Center, on a half acre property adjacent to Beth Israel. Completion of the second facility is expected by mid-2007.

West Virginia University Expands Ruby Memorial Campus

West Virginia University is expanding its Ruby Memorial Hospital and Health Sciences Campus in Morgantown with the construction of a new North/Northwest Tower. The eight-story addition will include 81 beds, six operating rooms, a new ICU and pediatric ICU, conference rooms, a pharmacy and lab, and sleeping rooms for on-call physicians. Baylor Health Care Constructs Cell Processing Lab

Baylor Health Care System is constructing a 2,200-sf cell processing lab at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. The $2.4-million GMP facility will house custom cancer vaccine manufacturing operations for Baylor subsidiary ODC Therapies. Sited in the Zelig H. Lieberman Research Building, the facility will help ODC continue the clinical trial process for patients in late stage malignant melanoma. Baylor plans to develop a significantly larger facility that includes office and lab space for ODC and other companies within two years.
