The six-story, 578,000-sf Edmonton Clinic Health Academy (ECHA) at the University of Alberta, Canada, brings together 800 faculty and staff from 12 departments, and 6,000 students from the Health Sciences Department, who focus on population health, computational research, and translational research.
Central Michigan University is planning to construct a $46.5 million campus in Saginaw for the College of Medicine. The project will be built in two phases and the cost of phase one is estimated at $25 million. The College of Medicine facilities will be created in partnership with Covenant HealthCare and St. Mary's of Michigan and will accommodate 400 students.
Continued signs of stable economic growth indicate that the recovery is gaining momentum in many parts of the United States and Canada. Construction selling prices for institutional projects grew at a 6 percent annualized rate in 2012, on top of a 3 percent increase in 2011. Construction costs are expected to continue stabilizing and rising in many regions as market confidence and capital spending increase.
University Hospital Aintree began construction in May of 2013 on a $63 million expansion of the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust campus in Liverpool. The 25,000-sf Project Arizona building will incorporate Passivhaus sustainable design principles to deliver a highly insulated facility for maximum energy efficiency. The expansion will provide inpatient and outpatient care facilities, a neuro-rehabilitation center, and a clinical research facility.
Royal Liverpool University Hospital is planning to construct a $511 million replacement facility in the United Kingdom. The public-private partnership project will be built by Carillion. Construction will begin in early 2014 with completion expected in 2017. Carillion will also provide support services for the sustainably designed hospital, which will accommodate 646 inpatient beds, a 40-bed critical care unit, 18 surgical suites, and an expanded emergency department.
Stanford Hospital broke ground in May of 2013 on an 824,000-sf replacement facility in Palo Alto. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects in association with Lee, Burkhart, Liu, the patient-centered hospital will provide 17 operating rooms, advanced imaging suites, an emergency department, a Level One trauma center, and 368 private inpatient rooms. The sustainably designed facility will feature abundant natural light and five healing gardens. Completion is expected in 2017 with occupancy in early 2018.
Emory Healthcare broke ground in May of 2013 on the $200 million Emory Proton Therapy Center in Atlanta. The 107,000-sf facility will enable Emory's Winship Cancer Institute to provide advanced radiation oncology services. The center is being built in partnership with Advanced Particle Therapy of San Diego, CA. Occupancy is expected in 2016. The Winship Cancer Institute is Georgia’s only National Cancer Institute-designated treatment facility and is part of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center.
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) is building the $360 million Children's Hospital in Iowa City. Construction began on the 14-story facility in October of 2012 and completion is expected in spring of 2016. The 507,000-sf project will provide 134 new inpatient beds for a total of 189 beds. Two floors will be constructed below grade. The new Children's Hospital will enable UIHC to consolidate all pediatric services in a single location.
Shriners Hospitals for Children has selected SNC-Lavalin to construct and commission its $127 million replacement facility in Montreal. Construction will begin in April of 2013 with completion expected in fall of 2015. Located on the Glen campus of the McGill University Health Centre, the eight-story, 220,660-sf facility will provide 24,756 sf of research space, 22 private inpatient rooms, ambulatory care, a basic research and clinical investigation suite, four operating rooms, and a $400,000 surgical skills training lab.
The University of Sydney is building the $385 million Charles Perkins Centre on its Camperdown campus. Housing 950 researchers and 1,455 undergraduates, the 502,680-sf biomedical teaching and research facility will provide five 60-seat dry labs and two wet teaching labs, one with seating for 12 and the other able to accommodate 240 occupants. Supporting research on conditions such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes, the multidisciplinary project will include a flow cytometry suite, clinical research space, a biobank, and advanced imaging technologies.
Spurred into action by a broken autoclave, Rush University Medical Center gutted and rebuilt its 30-plus-year-old BSL-3 lab and its anteroom, while converting existing adjacent offices into a dedicated mechanical room. The primary goals with the renovation were to bring the lab up to contemporary BSL-3 standards and to isolate its infrastructure and utilities from the rest of the Jelke Building, a mixed-use lab and patient-care building.
The Gates Vascular Institute (GVI) transforms the concept of translational collaboration, uniting not only a private health entity with a public institution, but also patients, physicians, researchers, educators, industry, and government within a state-of-the-art vertical campus. The building brings together, through a unique public/private partnership, the heart, vascular, and emergency facilities of Kaleida Health; the Clinical Translational Research Center (CTRC) of the University at Buffalo (UB); and a biosciences incubator and The Jacobs Institute of Neurology, both UB affiliates.
The two-story, 93,455-sf Saint Louis County Health Campus replaces and consolidates two facilities: the old headquarters and the John C. Murphy Health Clinic, which was located on the site. The first floor houses the vital records office, as well as the Murphy Health Center. The clinic includes women's health, pediatrics, dental, WIC, nutrition, X-ray, and clinical labs. The modern, spacious facility also houses health education, with three community classrooms and a larger community room. The Chest Clinic has a separate entrance on the west side of the building.
The University at Buffalo will break ground in September of 2013 on the $375 million School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Designed by HOK to foster interaction and collaboration, the seven-story, 500,000-sf project will be integrated with UB's academic medical center to promote a synthesis of instruction, research, and treatment. The facility comprises two L-shaped structures linked to create a six-story glass atrium. The ground floor includes a transit hub.
Saint Thomas Hospital broke ground in April of 2013 on a $110 million construction and renovation project in Nashville. A six-story inpatient tower will be built and existing critical care and operating rooms will be renovated and expanded. The project architect is FreemanWhite and the construction manager is Turner Construction. Completion is expected in 2017.
