University of Missouri Health Care opened a $190 million patient tower in March of 2013. Located at University Hospital in Columbia, the eight-story, 310,500-sf facility provides 90 private patient rooms, 35 pre-procedure rooms, 18 post-procedure rooms, six surgical suites, and an intensive care unit. The tower also houses the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. Construction began on the facility in September of 2010. The project was designed by HOK.

The University of Washington has completed a new seven-story research facility in Seattle. UW Medicine South Lake Union 3.1 is currently undergoing commissioning and will be occupied by summer of 2013. Designed by Perkins+Will to facilitate collaboration, the building will house lab groups involved in kidney research, vision sciences, immunology, rheumatology, and infectious disease investigations. The total project cost was $164 million with a construction cost of $113 million. The 330,000-gsf project provides 180,000 gsf of research and support space.

The Performance Guaranteed Facility (PGF) model is a relatively new type of public/private partnership that allows the occupants to own a building the moment construction begins, while private-sector partners commit to its design, construction, financing, and ongoing maintenance, including future rehabilitation. The model goes by different names, but the concept involves an interactive partnership designed to benefit all parties for the long term.

Queen’s University began building the $51 million Centre for Experimental Medicine in March of 2013 in Belfast. Located in the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology on the Institute of Health Sciences campus, the four-story, 97,000-sf facility will provide advanced laboratories for biomedical research with a focus on diabetes, eye disease, and genetic illnesses.

Sahlgrenska University Hospital has selected Skanska to build a cancer imaging and intervention center in Gothenburg, Sweden. The $63 million contract includes construction and conversion of a total area of 237,000 sf to provide advanced facilities for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Work will begin on the project in early 2014 with completion expected in late 2015.

Driven by a spirit of collaboration, Kaleida Health and the University at Buffalo united within a single structure to bring several disciplines—and patients, surgeons, and researchers—together to exchange knowledge and ignite innovation. The 476,000-sf facility achieves this by stacking a translational research building over a clinical vascular institute. The first floors of this 10-story "vertical campus" house the Gates Vascular Institute (GVI), with the Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) occupying the top half of the building.

Duke University School of Medicine celebrated the opening of the $53 million Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans Center for Health Education in February of 2013. Located in Durham, N.C., the six-story, 104,000-sf facility features simulation labs for medical training as well as mock surgical suites, emergency rooms, and clinical offices. The Center for Health Education also houses an auditorium, a learning hall, study rooms, and flexible classrooms for team-based learning.

The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute broke ground on a $74.2 million outpatient Facility in Tampa in January of 2013. The eight-story, 150,000-sf building will house research labs, four ambulatory surgical suites, a diagnostic imaging center, clinical space, and administrative offices. Occupancy is expected in February of 2015. Moffitt is a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center and is headquartered on the campus of the University of South Florida.

The Blood Research Institute, with eight core laboratories serving 21 investigator-level scientists, is a state-of-the-art research facility located on the campus of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center, along with the Medical College of Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

The Translational and Biomedical Research Center for the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and the Children's Research Institute (CRI) provide a technically sophisticated facility that supports a broad range of research projects and protocols. The contemporary design enables MCW to expand its research environment, recruit researchers, and secure additional grant money. In addition, the lab building elevates CRI's national leadership profile in pediatric healthcare as it recruits top talent and conducts treatment and diagnostic research.

UConn Health Center began building the $203 million Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) in Farmington in February of 2013. The eight-story, 300,000-sf building will house the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center, multiple clinical programs, and outpatient faculty practices. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility. Completion is expected in early 2015.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is planning to build the $115 million Williamson Translational Research Building in Lebanon, N.H. The 165,000-sf facility will provide collaborative research space supporting the integration of medical discoveries into patient care. Construction is expected to begin on the project in spring of 2013.

Northwestern Medicine is planning to build a new biomedical research facility in Chicago. Connecting to the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center on every level, the building will provide between 300,000 and 500,000 sf of advanced translational research space. Total build-out is estimated at 1.2 million sf. The $1 billion project also includes the renovation of 250,000 sf of lab space in existing facilities.

The newly renovated Saint Luke's Neuroscience Institute opened in January of 2013 in Kansas City, Mo. The $32 million project was designed by ACI/Boland with J.E. Dunn Construction as general contractor. Integrating research with clinical care, the project provides four dedicated neurological operation rooms, a 13-bed recovery unit, three neurointerventional suites, an 18-bed ICU, and 68 private patient rooms. The duration of construction was one year.

The University of California, San Diego broke ground in January of 2013 on the $269 million Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute in La Jolla. Supporting the integration of genetic sequencing technologies into patient diagnosis and treatment, the seven-story, 315,000-sf project will provide collaborative research labs and offices for clinical investigators, informatics researchers, and biomedical scientists. The facility is located near Thornton Hospital, the Moores Cancer Center, the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, and the new Jacobs Medical Center.
