Birmingham, Ala.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham broke ground on the Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building in April of 2022. Designed by Williams Blackstock Architects, the $78 million project involves the renovation and expansion of the existing Lyons-Harrison Research Building to accommodate leading-edge laboratories, computational suites, collaboration spaces, meeting rooms, and offices. Accelerating the translation of medical discoveries into new solutions for patient care, the 175,000-sf facility will house the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute, the Informatics Institute, and the Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation Conference Center will offer a variety of settings for dynamic knowledge exchange with industry and academic partners. The public-private project is supported by $50 million in state funding, as well as donations from the Altec/Styslinger Foundation and Marnix and Mary Heersink. Completion is expected in spring of 2024.
