University of Michigan Health opened a $920 million clinical inpatient tower in November of 2025 in Ann Arbor. Designed by HOK and Integrated Design Solutions, the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion delivers high-level specialty care services for neurology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, spine conditions, and cardiovascular medicine, as well as cardiac, vascular, and thoracic surgery. The 264-bed hospital features advanced diagnostic imaging technologies including intraoperative MRI capabilities, and houses 20 surgical rooms, 40 ICU beds, and three interventional radiology suites.
A neurosciences center provides a 24-bed neurocritical care unit, a stroke unit with a 100-ft gait and balance system, and a designated epilepsy monitoring unit that incorporates EEG instrumentation and a day room to safely monitor seizures. Connecting to the existing U-M Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center on the first and third floors, the twelve-story facility accommodates a cardiology intensive care unit and a heart failure unit on its top level. The 690,000-gsf facility includes centralized collaboration venues and will offer the flexibility to adapt to changes in medical programs over time.
Targeting LEED Platinum certification, the sustainable building integrates highly efficient lighting, advanced controls, low-emission materials, water conservation mechanisms, and a connection to a central cogeneration plant. A high-performance exterior façade with 23 percent vision glass optimizes access to natural light while controlling heat gain and loss, and heat recovery chillers and regenerative drive elevators maximize the recovery and reuse of energy.
HOK also supplied programming, master planning, and interior and structural design services. Affiliated Engineers, Inc. (AEI) was the MEP engineer and Beckett & Raeder was the civil engineer. Barton Malow broke ground on the project in spring of 2021.
