Norwich University is constructing the Cyber Fusion Research and Development Center in Northfield, Vt. The multifunctional building will provide leading-edge environments for programs related to cybersecurity, advanced computing, criminology, communications, geointelligence, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and information dominance and warfare. Designed by Jones Architecture and Freeman French Freeman, the 13,000-gsf structure will feature a security operations center, flexible R&D labs, a maker space, and meeting and event venues equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual and teleconferencing capabilities. A collaborative work area will be accompanied by classrooms, offices, and a media lab for producing and editing content generated by the university and its affiliates.
Furthering the activities of the Norwich University Applied Research Institutes (NUARI), the facility will enable the simulation of cyber attack and defend scenarios, and accelerate the creation of novel solutions for cyber and mobile device forensics. Student from across campus will engage in hands-on learning with industry experts, fostering the growth of productive relationships with government and private partners.
Supported by $16.4 million in federal funding, the modular and adaptable project will be delivered in compliance with the Build America Buy America Act (BABAA). Sophisticated infrastructure will enhance operational performance and ensure future capacity for changing requirements. Engelberth Construction is the general contractor and RFS Engineering is providing engineering services. Ground was broken in April of 2025 on the sustainable development, which is targeting LEED Silver certification. A completion date has yet to be determined.
As the oldest private military college in the United States, Norwich University educates traditional-age students in a Corps of Cadets or as civilians, as well as serving adult students. The institution is recognized as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security, and has received designation as a Center of Digital Forensics Academic Excellence (CDFAE) by the Defense Cyber Crime Center.
