Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences opened the Harold Alfond Center for Ocean Education and Innovation in June of 2025. Designed by Harriman, the $31 million project represents a 40 percent increase in the footprint of the nonprofit institution's campus in East Boothbay, Maine. The 25,000-sf expansion offers advanced laboratories for discovery and development where investigators will translate early-stage ideas into novel products and solutions. Key focus areas include carbon dioxide removal techniques, seaweed and shellfish aquaculture, and ocean forecasting powered by artificial intelligence. This launchpad for applied marine science unites fundamental research activities with resources for entrepreneurship and commercialization to drive the creation of sustainable strategies for ocean health.
Accommodating a growing staff population, the interactive facility promotes the generation of a skilled workforce by providing opportunities for specialized instruction and training. Technology-rich classrooms and teaching labs enable students, scientists, and resource managers to participate in an array of professional development and academic programs. A versatile, two-story forum with 300 seats will act as a beacon for international scientific collaboration, as well as hosting community education courses and events.
Bigelow Laboratory’s current campus was the first scientific research complex to achieve LEED Platinum certification in Maine. Continuing that legacy of leadership, the Alfond Center is one of the first facilities in the nation to comply with the Build America Buy America Act (BABAA). Consigli Construction broke ground in October of 2023 on the project, which prioritized American-made materials to foster domestic economic growth.
