Savannah River National Laboratory opened the Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC) in August of 2025 on the campus of the University of South Carolina Aiken. Designed by STOA Architects and Page (now part of Stantec), the $66 million facility will enable the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management to engage in collaborative discovery with academic institutions, industry partners, and government agencies at the city, state, and federal level.
The two-story, 63,000-sf innovation hub houses 16 labs, offices, classrooms, and a conference room with capacity for over 70 guests. Sophisticated R&D zones will accelerate the commercialization of new technologies. The highly flexible structure features a high bay space spanning 92,000 cubic feet, as well as an interactive staircase and myriad informal meeting zones to foster knowledge exchange between agencies.
The state-of-the-art building accommodates specialized environments for the development of next-generation technologies for chemical and material production. Core focus areas include additive manufacturing, AI-driven automation, robotics, computational chemistry, process imaging and intensification, and remote and autonomous systems. Serving as an iconic campus gateway, the AMC will advance research in clean energy and nuclear materials, and provide training opportunities for the manufacturing workforce of the future.
LBYD Federal was the designer of record and North Wind Group performed contracting and commissioning services for the public-private project, which has attained LEED Silver certification. Ground was broken in April of 2022.
