The University of Nevada, Reno is planning to break ground in fall of 2026 on a $137 million life sciences building. Located in the Mathewson University Gateway District, the 89,000-sf facility will provide leading-edge environments for both the College of Science and the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources. The technology-rich center will feature 18 research labs for programs in chemical ecology, neuroscience, and molecular and cellular biology, along with associated support areas and offices. Four undergraduate teaching labs will optimize academic outcomes, augmented by 12 conference and collaboration venues to enhance interaction and knowledge exchange.
Students will be able to train on the same equipment that they will utilize upon entering the workforce, preparing them for high-demand careers in medicine, nursing, biotechnology, agriculture, nutrition, and climate and environmental sciences. The structure will also showcase the relocated Museum of Natural History to foster community engagement, as well as a 300-seat auditorium that will be available to the entire university community.
Designed by H+K Architects, the state-of-the-art facility will serve more than 4,000 students each year. The accessible, pedestrian-friendly development will incorporate two entrances, with an exterior circulation route that connects through the Gateway Parking Complex to the main campus via a bridge. Owned by the Nevada State Higher Education Board, the project is made possible by $68.5 million in state funding and matching private and institutional contributions, including a $30 million donation. CORE Construction is serving as general contractor and occupancy is expected in fall of 2029. The new life sciences hub will replace the Fleischmann College of Agriculture building, which will be repurposed to house less demanding programs due to an inability to accommodate the robust systems needed for modern research and learning.
