Nemours Children’s Health opened the Advanced Delivery Unit (ADU) in April of 2026 within their flagship hospital in Wilmington, Del. The 26,000-sf facility integrates prenatal diagnosis, imaging, and in utero procedures with delivery, surgical treatment, and postpartum recovery to create a single integrated environment for the provision of coordinated care. Designed by Perkins&Will to foster clinical excellence and patient wellbeing, the purpose-built hub accommodates a residential-style kitchen and lounge for family gatherings, as well as a venue for yoga, music therapy, and group sessions. The leading-edge unit features a strategic layout with embedded operating rooms and highly flexible spaces that enable optimal interventions during high-risk or complex pregnancies, while maintaining crucial physical proximity between mothers and newborns. Turner Construction served as the general contractor.

The ADU constitutes part of a wider development by Nemours, which includes the recently unveiled Institute for Maternal Health. Representing the state’s first surgical fetal care center, this dynamic facility increases access to advanced services throughout the region, enhancing the ability of physicians to diagnose and treat some conditions even before birth. Additionally, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) services have expanded and a psychosocial support initiative for families has been established. Together with the revitalization of the historic Alfred I. duPont Institute building and the growth of cardiology and cancer programs, these projects bring the health system's 2025 investment in the Delaware campus to an estimated $130 million.
