Colorado State University is constructing the Advanced Technology Lasers for Applications and Science (ATLAS) facility in Fort Collins. The $160 million building will enable research in fusion energy, fundamental science, and advanced materials characterization to solve pressing challenges related to clean energy. Designed by SWBR as a testbed for critical emerging technologies, the 77,626-sf structure will house three of the most sophisticated high-repetition, multi-petawatt lasers in the world, augmented by modular experimental stations that can rapidly adapt to evolving requirements.

Laboratory environments will feature cleanrooms rated up to ISO 6 (Class 1000), with robust HVAC systems maintaining precise temperature and humidity specifications. Incorporating 7,500 cubic yards of reinforced concrete, the two-story development will enhance vibration isolation with 5-foot thick walls around the laser and target bays, plus a 3-foot-thick slab beneath. A control room will be accompanied by venues for education and workforce training.

Anchored by a public-private partnership with Marvel Fusion, this global center will unite academia, industry, and federal collaborators, including the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of Defense. In addition to high-power laser research, ATLAS will support rapid R&D cycles to drive progress in areas including national security and plasma physics. Industrial imaging will be conducted using high-energy X-ray and gamma-ray diagnostics. Semiconductor applications will be explored, such as using extreme ultraviolet lithography to create next-generation microchips.

The project is being developed by Tetrad Real Estate and constructed by McCarthy Building Companies, with Salas O’Brien providing MEP/FP, CFD, and sustainability engineering services. Ground was broken in October of 2024 and substantial completion is slated for December of 2026.
