The University of West Florida broke ground in April of 2026 on an advanced intelligence, cybersecurity, and engineering research facility in Pensacola. Building 129, also known as the Synapse, was designed by Caldwell Architects and Perkins&Will to serve as the base for the Center for Computational Intelligence and the Center for Cybersecurity and AI. Inspired by neuromorphic architecture, the 55,000-sf structure will collocate research environments, offices, and open gathering spaces to spark interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation through parallel discovery and information exchange.
Specialized labs will employ leading-edge technologies and equipment to address varying computational demands, and a central multistory atrium with interconnected circulation paths will further catalyze intellectual connectivity and social interaction. Students will benefit from access to a wide array of opportunities for experiential learning. The sophisticated hub will strengthen industry partnerships, prepare graduates for vital future careers, and accelerate projects that tackle complex, real-world challenges across diverse fields such as robotics, power systems, materials science, and civil engineering.
Positioning the University of West Florida as a leader in securing and advancing intelligent systems, the Synapse is supported by over $21 million in state funding, as well as a portion of a $32.5 million award from Triumph Gold Coast. Greenhut Construction is serving as general contractor for the project and completion is estimated in June of 2027.
