Sandia Labs Renovates Battery Testing Facility
Sandia Labs is engaged in a $4.2 million renovation of the Battery Abuse Testing Laboratory in Albuquerque, N.M. Supported by federal stimulus funding, the project will enable the facility to test larger batteries for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The completed laboratory will house new spectrometers, laser diagnostics, and six accelerating rate calorimeters. Construction began on the renovation in December of 2010 with completion expected in late 2011. The Battery Abuse Testing Laboratory was built in 1991.
Construction Begins on Women and Newborn Hospital in Winnipeg
Construction began in July of 2011 on the $239 million Women and Newborn Hospital at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre in Manitoba. The 385,000-sf facility was designed by Smith Carter and is expected to open in June of 2014. The five-story hospital will feature a 60-bed neonatal intensive care unit and 100 percent outside air. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the project.
King Fahd University Plans Research Facility
King Fahd University is planning to build a $150 million research facility in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Designed by Kornberg Associates, the 120,000-sf building will house core lab space with advanced instrumentation for materials testing and analysis. The collaborative facility will be used by multiple departments as well as industry clients.
University of Pretoria Completes Engineering III Facility
The University of Pretoria completed the $58.8 million Engineering III facility in July of 2011. Located on the Hatfield campus in Pretoria, Gauteng, the building houses 17 labs, two 500-seat lecture halls, four 200-seat lecture halls, a 450-seat auditorium, 41 faculty offices, 25 postgraduate offices, conference rooms, and a parking garage. Construction began on the facility in September of 2009. The project was designed and managed by ARC Architects with Aurecon as engineering consultant.
Laboratorios Hipra Plans Ames Vaccine Facility
Animal health company Laboratorios Hipra is planning to build a vaccine production laboratory in Ames, Iowa. Located in the Iowa State University Research Park, the facility will act as Laboratorios Hipra’s U.S. headquarters. Construction on the 100,000-sf project will begin in 2011 with production commencing in early 2013.
