Lancaster University Arts Institute Attains BREEAM Outstanding
Lancaster University's Institute for Contemporary Arts has attained BREEAM Outstanding sustainable design certification. Designed by Sheppard Robson and built by Morgan Sindall, the $16.1 million, 32,000-sf facility was completed in March of 2011.
UCLA Plans Clinical and Translational Research Center
The University of California, Los Angeles is planning to build the 23,000-sf Clinical and Translational Research Center. The facility will include clinical research space and a core biomarkers laboratory. The project is supported by a five-year Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) of $81.3 million to UCLA in partnership with Cedars–Sinai Medical Center, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, and the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor–UCLA Medical Center.
Saint Francis Medical Center Opens Heart Hospital and Cancer Institute
Saint Francis Medical Center will open its $84 million Heart Hospital and Cancer Institute in July of 2011. Located in Cape Girardeau, Mo., the 208,000-sf facility will provide advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies in a patient-centered environment. The Heart Hospital houses 60 private acute care rooms, a 10-bed cardiac ICU, six ultrasound rooms, and five cardiac catheterization labs. The Cancer Institute houses physician offices, 35 chemotherapy treatment stations, four private rooms, two linear accelerators, a laboratory, imaging, and surgical suites.
University of Massachusetts Constructs Sherman Center
Massachusetts Medical School is building the $405 million Albert Sherman Center in Worcester. Ground was broken on the nine-story, 500,000-sf facility in September of 2009 with completion expected in early 2012. Designed by ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge, the project will house advanced biomedical research laboratories, cleanrooms, a 300-seat auditorium, the UMass Gene Therapy Center, and the UMass Center for Stem Cell Biology. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.
Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies Adds Single-Use Bioreactor
Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies is expanding its bioprocessing facility in Research Triangle Park, N.C., with the addition of a 1,000L Xcellerex single-use bioreactor. The project will enable Fujifilm Diosynth to increase its cell culture production capacity. The single-use bioreactor will provide flexibility of scale for the manufacture of therapeutics for preclinical and clinical research. The expansion is expected to be fully operational in the first quarter of 2012.
