Trinity University's New Humanities Building Features Mass Timber Construction

Trinity University opened Dicke Hall in September of 2022 in San Antonio. Designed by Lake Flato, the 40,000-sf facility provides next-generation learning environments for the Department of English, the Department of Religion, and the Humanities Collective. Putting a modern spin on how these timeless academic disciplines are explored, the three-story building serves as a gathering place for students and faculty to exchange ideas, offering numerous collaboration spaces, a screening room, a large lecture hall, and a variety of flexible classrooms.

Drexel University Opens Health Sciences Building

Drexel University opened the 460,000-sf Health Sciences Building in September of 2022 in Philadelphia. Developed and owned by Wexford Science+Technology and Ventas, the leased facility is strategically sited in the uCity Square innovation district. Consolidating teaching and research activities previously dispersed in separate locations throughout the city, the 12-story tower centralizes many of Drexel’s health-related programs and integrates them into the main university campus.

Canadian Nuclear Labs Breaks Ground on Chalk River Research Facility

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories broke ground in September of 2022 on the $500 million Advanced Nuclear Materials Research Centre at Chalk River Laboratories in Ontario. Featuring mass timber components, the 108,000-sf building will provide state-of-the-art research environments for the development of advanced nuclear technologies. Accommodating 240 employees, the secure structure will house flexible laboratories, administrative offices, and 12 shielded hot cells with accompanying glovebox facilities.

University of Huddersfield Plans National Health Innovation Campus

The University of Huddersfield is planning to construct the National Health Innovation Campus in Huddersfield in the United Kingdom. The transformative development will integrate teaching, research, and outpatient care facilities to optimize health outcomes in the Yorkshire and Humber region and nationwide. Designed by AHR Architects, the first phase of construction will create a new home for the Health and Wellbeing Academy.

Takeda Plans Biopharmaceutical R&D Center in Kendall Square

Takeda is partnering with BioMed Realty to create a 600,000-sf R&D center in Cambridge. Designed by CBT Architects, the 16-story facility will provide sophisticated lab and office environments for the discovery of next-generation biopharmaceutical therapies and vaccines. Takeda has executed a 15-year lease for all of the research floors in the building, which will feature flexible spaces that maximize in-person interaction and connection under a hybrid working model.

University of Pennsylvania Partners with Longfellow to Create Life Sciences Center

The University of Pennsylvania and Longfellow Real Estate Partners are planning to construct a 455,000-sf life sciences center on the Pennovation Works property in Philadelphia. Designed by Jacobs, the project will include three structures providing a total of 387,000 sf of R&D space and 68,000 sf of biomanufacturing space for the production of cell and gene therapies.

Located on the Spur campus, the 60,000-sf facility offers immersive environments for agricultural research, education, and outreach. Featuring state-of-the-art laboratories and plant growth chambers, the sustainably designed project includes a teaching and culinary kitchen, sensory testing areas, classrooms, a K-12 discovery center, and venues for events and performances.

University of California, Davis Breaks Ground on Aggie Square

The University of California, Davis broke ground in February of 2022 on Aggie Square in Sacramento. Designed by ZGF Architects, the first phase of the mixed-use district is being developed in partnership with Wexford Science + Technology and GMH Capital Partners, who will finance, construct, and own the facilities. At the heart of Aggie Square, a vibrant central plaza will offer a variety of settings for informal interaction, mobile work, and outdoor gatherings.

Pfizer Opens Clinical Manufacturing Facility

Pfizer opened a $68.5 million clinical manufacturing facility in December of 2021 in Durham. Accommodating the company's BioTherapeutics Pharmaceutical Sciences division, the 85,500-sf project will support the creation of gene therapies for the treatment of hemophilia A, hemophilia B, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and other diseases. Leveraging single-use bioreactors to enable scalable expansion over time, the structure provides multiple drug substance suites, analytical and microbiology labs, and areas for manufacturing and filling.

University of Redlands Plans Mixed-Use District

The University of Redlands is planning to construct the 30-acre University Village adjacent to its existing campus in Redlands, Calif. Moore Ruble Yudell has been selected as the architect and planner for the public-private development, which is being created in collaboration with REACH Redlands LLC, a joint venture of Republic MetropolitanCreative Housing Associates, and Arteco Partners.

Fitzsimons Innovation Community Breaks Ground on Cell and Gene Therapy Center

The Fitzsimons Innovation Community broke ground in August of 2021 on Bioscience 5 in Aurora, Colo. Strategically located next to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, the 90,000-sf building will enable biomedical and pharmaceutical tenants to manufacture next-generation cell and gene therapy products on a commercial scale. Saunders Construction is the general contractor for the highly flexible facility, which is slated for occupancy in spring of 2022.

Salt Lake Community College and University of Utah Create Juniper Canyon Campus

The University of Utah and Salt Lake Community College broke ground in July of 2021 on a $57 million shared facility in Herriman. The 90,000-sf structure will accommodate associate and bachelor’s degree programs in high-demand fields such as computer science, engineering, business administration, criminal justice, nursing, social work, and teaching. The structure will also incorporate student services centers for both institutions including admissions, financial aid, advising, tutoring, and transfer support.

GE Aviation Builds Advanced Manufacturing Center

GE Aviation broke ground in June of 2021 on an advanced manufacturing center in Beavercreek, Ohio. Sited on 53 acres in the Miami Valley Research Park, the 280,000-sf structure will enable the development and production of gas turbine engine components and mechanical systems for a variety of industries, including aviation, space, defense, oil, and gas. Integrating high-performance glazing and insulated concrete wall panels, the steel-framed facility will leverage lean manufacturing technologies to optimize efficiency and reduce waste.

Designed by Stantec, the 64,000-sf facility will provide a centralized home for the university's online education activities. Accommodating current and future advances in virtual learning approaches, the project will feature unique adaptable environments for digital content creation and instruction.

Oxford Properties Expands Life Sciences Portfolio

Canadian developer Oxford Properties has expanded its real estate portfolio in the United States with the acquisition of four new assets. Representing an investment of $276 million in the burgeoning life sciences industry, the purchase included a total of 415,000 sf of existing space and associated developable land. Oxford Properties plans to spend an additional $500 million to repurpose, renovate, and expand the four structures to create leading-edge lab and office environments for biomedical tenants.
