Gilead Sciences is constructing the Cancer Research Center in Foster City to accelerate the creation of novel solutions for pressing medical challenges. Driven by the company's enterprise master plan, the project is part of a strategic initiative to develop an internal research infrastructure that advances discovery in key focus areas and brings new technological capabilities in-house. The 182,000-sf facility was designed by Gensler to catalyze synergies between 54 clinical programs spanning oncology, inflammation, and virology. Each floor will accommodate an integrated neighborhood of flexible, digitally enabled lab environments and collaborative workspaces, accompanied by dedicated instrumentation suites and areas for handling biological materials.
Featuring an iconic glazed curtainwall with vertical metal fins, the five-story building is being delivered by Suffolk Construction, with Gayle Manufacturing Company acting as structural steel fabricator and contractor. A sophisticated façade will allow fresh air to penetrate the structure through terraces on the middle floors to enhance occupant wellbeing and productivity. Representing an investment of up to $200 million, this nexus of life science innovation will open onto an inspiring outdoor quad with a range of settings for informal interaction and exchange. Petersen Studio is the landscape architect for the sustainable development, which will incorporate native and drought-tolerant plantings. Occupancy is anticipated in late 2026.
