Saint Anthony College of Nursing is moving to a new facility on the campus of Rock Valley College in Rockford, Ill. The four-story, 117,000-sf Health Science Center will provide 13 classrooms and 10 labs. Rock Valley College will occupy approximately 80,000 sf in the $32 million building and the top two floors will be leased by Saint Anthony. Construction began in June of 2015 and occupancy is expected in January of 2017.
IU Health, Indiana University, and IU Bloomington Hospital are partnering to create a new regional academic health center. Located adjacent to the IU Technology Park, the project includes construction of a replacement facility for IU Health Bloomington Hospital and an instructional building for the Indiana University School of Medicine. The regional academic health complex will promote collaboration between faculty, researchers, clinicians, medical staff, and students. Design work will begin in late spring of 2015.
Missouri State University is building the $19.5 million O’Reilly Clinical Health Sciences Center in Springfield. The 50,000-sf facility will provide a multidisciplinary health clinic, medical skills training labs, simulation suites, classrooms, offices, and space for nursing and occupational therapy programs. Construction began on the project in July of 2014 and completion is expected in fall of 2015.
Bay Path University opened the $13.7 million Philip H. Ryan Health Science Center in January of 2015 in East Longmeadow, Mass. The two-story, 58,000-sf facility provides simulation training labs, technology-rich classrooms, faculty offices, conference rooms, collaborative learning areas, group study rooms, a library, and a model apartment for instruction in occupational therapy. General contractor Crocker Builders began construction on the facility in November of 2013.
The University of Waterloo broke ground on the $18.6 million Applied Health Sciences facility in December of 2014. Designed by IBI Group Architects, the four-story, 56,000-sf project will be constructed as an expansion of the existing B.C. Matthews Hall and the adjoining Lyle S. Hallman Institute. The addition will provide a 350-seat lecture hall and technology-rich teaching laboratories, including labs for anatomy and kinesiology. The general contractor is Melloul Blamey Construction. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2016.
Westfield State University broke ground on a $33 million science center in September of 2014 in Westfield, Mass. The 54,000-sf academic facility will house laboratories, medical simulation suites, and a technology-rich interdisciplinary classroom. The existing Wilson Hall will also be renovated. The project team includes architect Cambridge Seven Associates and general contractor Walsh Brothers Construction. Completion is expected in August of 2016.
Central Michigan University is constructing a $25 million facility for the College of Medicine in Saginaw. The two-story, 46,000-sf project is expected to attain LEED Silver sustainable design certification and will provide classrooms, procedure training rooms, offices, a student commons, and a library. The general contractor is Barton Malow and completion is expected in May of 2015. The project represents the first phase of CMU's $46.5 million College of Medicine East Campus, which is being created in partnership with Covenant HealthCare and St.
Parkview Health is building the $20 million Mirro Center for Research and Education in Fort Wayne, Ind. The 82,000-sf translational research facility will accommodate clinical trials for pharmaceutical products and medical devices, as well as housing instructional space and a simulation training suite. The building will provide labs, offices, conference rooms, and an auditorium. Completion is expected in early 2015.
Georgia Gwinnett College opened the $30 million Allied Health and Science Building in August of 2014 in Lawrenceville. The three-story, 91,000-sf interdisciplinary facility provides laboratories for biology, chemistry, physics, and anatomy and physiology, as well as housing classrooms, faculty offices, and study areas. The second floor of the building accommodates the nursing program and includes a technology-rich classroom for team-based learning and a simulation training center with a 14-bed clinical practice lab.
The 268,000-sf, six-story Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB) incorporates the College of Medicine and Pharmacy from the Arizona School of Medicine with Northern Arizona University’s physician assistant, physical therapy, and occupational therapy programs into the integrated and interdisciplinary Phoenix Biomedical Campus. A 2-million-sf, 28-acre campus master plan includes a recently constructed 20,000-sf underground vivarium, and several research buildings. To the north is a cancer center, which adds a clinical component.
Arkansas Tech University will begin construction in October of 2014 on a 20,273-sf allied health building on the Ozark campus. Supported by $6 million in revenue bond funding, the two-story facility will provide technology-rich teaching labs and clinical simulation suites as well as faculty and staff offices, three computer labs, and a testing center. Completion is expected in November of 2015 with occupancy in spring of 2016.
Rochester Institute of Technology broke ground on the Clinical Health Sciences Center in April of 2014 in Henrietta, N.Y. Accommodating programs for the College of Health Sciences and Technology, the 45,000-sf facility will include dedicated space for the new Wegmans School of Health and Nutrition as well as housing a primary care clinic operated by Rochester General Health System. Constructed as an addition to the existing Louise M.
Black Hawk College broke ground on the $15 million Health Sciences Center in April of 2014. Located on the Quad-Cities campus in Moline, Ill., the three-story, 46,300-sf facility will provide eight labs, two classrooms, two conference rooms, a 64-seat lecture hall, and faculty offices. The center will accommodate programs in nursing, physical therapy, emergency medical services, surgical technology, veterinary assistance, and health information management. Completion is expected in June of 2015.
Institutions that educate medical professionals are building an increasing number of simulation centers in response to the need for more hands-on, interdisciplinary, real-life training scenarios. Although these facilities can generate revenue, the expense of the equipment and related costs make it difficult to be profitable. But, with the use of creative design strategies, institutions can improve utilization and generate income.
The University of Scranton is building a $47.5 million center for rehabilitation education in Scranton, Pa. Supporting an interprofessional medical education pedagogy, the 116,000-sf facility will provide classrooms, simulation training suites, faculty offices, and 25 laboratories for programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and exercise science. The center was designed by Hemmler + Camayd and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson in association with HERA Laboratory Planners.
