Virginia Commonwealth University opened the $87 million College of Health Professions in March of 2019 in Richmond. Designed by EYP Architecture and Engineering, the eight-story, 154,000-gsf facility unites nine departments in a sustainably designed structure that is expected to attain LEED Silver certification. Featuring sophisticated simulation training suites and synchronous distance-learning classrooms, the project provides an auditorium, technology-rich classrooms, teaching labs, and collaboration spaces for programs in allied health and interprofessional education. The facility also houses a smart apartment, a biomechanics research lab, an occupational therapy terrace, and maker spaces for the creation of adaptive aids. The building utilizes two curtainwall systems and ribbed precast concrete forms with punched windows to put learning on display while opening the interior to natural light and views.
