The University of North Dakota broke ground in September of 2025 on the STEM Complex in Grand Forks. Designed by Clark & Enersen and EAPC Architects Engineers, the $163 million facility aims to redefine education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the state and beyond. This dynamic ecosystem will foster corporate engagement while accelerating discovery in fields such as transportation, artificial intelligence, and advanced materials. Featuring leading-edge teaching and research laboratories, the three-story structure will accommodate modern classrooms, lecture halls, maker spaces, student success centers, and event areas for competitive robotics teams and esports tournaments.

This vibrant hub will break down silos between disciplines to drive effective collaboration, offering flexible zones for teamwork and student innovation that reflect evolving programmatic needs. Spanning 179,000 sf in total, the initial phase of the project will house the departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Forensic Science, and Mechanical Engineering. The second stage will create space for Civil Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Physics.

PCL Construction is the general contractor and Burian & Associates is providing civil site design services. Substantial completion of the first building is expected by summer of 2027.
