Construction is nearing completion on Samuel Merritt University’s health sciences education campus in Oakland, Calif. In addition to revitalizing the local economy, the 10-story tower will enable the university to double enrollment over the next decade to address the Bay Area’s critical shortage of healthcare workers by expanding the provider pipeline. The $240 million facility will feature 19 classrooms, a motion analysis center, and specialized teaching and research laboratories including a cadaver anatomy lab.

A 41,000-sf simulation space will leverage virtual and augmented reality technologies as well as traditional manikins to provide an immersive learning experience. Spanning 260,000 sf, this vibrant hub will also house administrative offices, student clinic areas, and venues for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and podiatric medicine.  The dynamic building was designed by Perkins&Will to maximize collaboration and enhance occupant wellbeing by combining environments for relaxation and socializing with those for teamwork and focus. A community engagement zone will be complemented by an inviting public plaza that will accommodate evening and weekend event programming.

Hathaway Dinwiddie broke ground on the flagship campus in April of 2023. Strada is managing the delivery of the core and shell, as well as the full interior build-out. Tipping is the project’s structural engineer and EinwillerKuehl is the landscape architect. Occupancy is anticipated in January of 2026.
