Roanoke College is constructing the Shaun McConnon Discovery Center in Salem, Va. Designed by VMDO Architects, the $60 million project will advance the study of biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics, and engineering. Forming a dynamic link between the existing Life Science building and Trexler Hall, the four-story facility will feature eight teaching labs, classrooms, and technology-rich fabrication and visualization labs to provide opportunities for hands-on learning. Interactive study areas will be complemented by sophisticated collaboration venues to enable cross-disciplinary discovery and innovation. The development will be topped by a vegetated roof and multipurpose terrace for outdoor learning and large events, shaded by a solar canopy.
Replacing the Massengill Auditorium, the energy-efficient structure will be illuminated by natural light to maximize sustainability. Flexible lab spaces will ensure ease of adaptation to evolving programmatic needs. Subsequent phases of construction will involve comprehensive renovations to the connected science buildings to create an integrated 120,000-sf complex.
The center will be delivered by Whiting-Turner in association with Matthews Development Company. Ground was broken in April of 2024 and occupancy is slated for fall of 2026.
